"The simplest things can often be the most difficult."
There is no greater burden in Rendan's life than that of love. Or rather, the lack of it. Between her father's trauma and her mother's duties, there was simply not enough love to go around. For her, love was always expressed through actions, not words. Doing chores, retrieving items, indecipherable expressions. Nothing concrete, nothing she could convince herself she wasn't simply imagining. Were they sad, when she announced she would be leaving her birth clan, or was that simply another trick of the light?
Even now, in the Clan of Glowing Night, Rendan struggles with love, both giving and receiving it. It still remains an incomprehensible enigma, an unknown factor that causes the dragons around her to act in ways she could never predict or understand. She knows, on paper, that she theoretically should be loved. She serves a practical purpose as the clan's Plague Representative. She is polite to her fellow clanmates. She tries to make herself useful.
Is that enough to be loved?
On cloudy days, when rain stirs up the scent of earth and pine needles, Rendan often finds herself sitting beside a very particular dragon. The meet at the same pile of rocks, shadowed by the same pine tree, and neither of them knows who decided to go there first. The Fae is her mate... and yet he is not her partner. (... Is she allowed, to have that?) They sit beside each other in silence, and Rendan wonders if the warmth she feels is love.
... Not romantic love, no, she knows that will never be a part of her heart. But love nonetheless, the kind that can be said aloud and felt without reservations. In an action worth a thousand words, she extends her wing, ever tentatively, and pulls her friend closer.
