Indara was born deep within the Helcim temple in the mountains of _. She never knew her parents, who were expelled from the temple for breaking their vows of abstinence. Their eggs were confiscated by the priestesses to be raised within the safety of Helcim.
Despite their ‘unruly’ origin, the eggs carried the divine blessing of the Flamecaller herself - primal, potent elemental magic ran deep in their veins. The inner circle of the temple agreed that these children had the potential to be the most gifted mages, and devotees, that they had even seen.
However, it was revealed upon hatching that only one of the blessed children was female - and covenant law denied male Dracae entry to the sanctum. Her brothers were expulsed from the sanctuary; left to fend for themselves in the wider world. She never heard from them again.
And so, her training began - she was ushered from one corridor library to the next, borne on hushed whispers and carried by rumour. It was no secret that she was the favoured acolyte - the High Priestess herself was preparing her for leadership in secrecy; but rumours spread like wildfire in the temple.
Indara's formative years were not the easiest. She turned out to be even more talented with channeling Fire magic and divine energy than foreseen and expectations placed on her climbed ever higher. Her peers, either too intimidated to talk to her or traded rumours like cards behind her back. She grew distant, shaped by the shadows of watchful figures and by the weight of the High Priestess’ expectations.
A coldness settled in her heart, deep behind her infernal, controlled facade. She longed for company, longed for the truth about her parents, and longed to be treated as an equal among her Hearth Sisters. Over the years she had seen how they treated the other disciples, how harsh words came to be when you do not happen to be ForgeTouched, and how they watched her with both fear and envy in their eyes. Something was broken, within the intricate mechanism of the the temple. She longed to fix it.
A few years passed - she had faithfully continued her training, but when night fell, she would skim along the shadows to the sanctums, and fill her robe with the heaviest tomes she could find. Knowledge of her people from across the ages bound in leather, hidden beneath the floorboards in her chamber, ready for the day when they could be shared with all.
She poured through her tomes, absorbing all she could of the secrets contained within. She learnt about human politics,
What if she turned out to be exactly like her mothers, a disappointment for her Hearth sisters? What if she wasn't, after all, Chosen? Deep down she was struggling to figure out who she was beyond what others expected of her. So when the time to complete her religious training came, she decided to go on a personal pilgrimage and leave the temple for the first time in her life.
Of course the college of priestesses did not fully approve of her decision - if she unknowingly followed her mothers' footsteps, the risk for their protégée to lose herself and never come back was big. Ultimately however they had to let her go and trust that she would return one day, taking her rightful place as a high priestess…
-mine begins-
downing self-doubt like fine wine, sipping slowly, savouring, she swirls her thoughts around the glass. it would be tonight. when the other turned her watchful eye from her children, and drifted to slumber, that she would leave.
she had to. she must. she feared they would never understand; and her worries were not misplaced. they were stuck in the old ways. but she would bring them the new. she would bring glory to the helcim name and to the Flamecaller.
she eyes the carved words above the door frame.
“the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.”
they rung tauntingly inside her head, reminding her of everything she was forsaking.
