Rancid
The Researcher
Acolyte of Grimoire
Status:
Alive (?)

Curious | Fussy | Organized | Studious | Sadistic

A fragile and sickly fae, Rancid relies on
the Necromancer's magic in order to keep himself from succumbing to his flesh-rot. He straddles the border between life and death. Rancid's flesh is gangrenous, covered with fungus, and emits an awful stench, but he is alive... if just barely. Even Rancid does not know if he is living or dead.

Rancid's domain is knowledge in all forms - ancient tomes bound in hatchling scales, scrolls marked in blood, and the secret messages hidden in the entrails of lambs and birds. He is both a librarian and a fortune teller, specializing in hidden and forbidden repositories of knowledge. He collects spellbooks that even the Arcanist would shun for being too evil.

Grimoire has known Rancid for decades. Before coming to the Scarred Wasteland, she purchased spellbooks from Rancid's collection and had them delivered via courier. Grimoire was a frequent and loyal customer with whom Rancid kept regular correspondence. Because of this, Grimoire sought him out shortly after she arrived in the Scarred Wasteland. Rancid helped her get established. He found the underground cave system in which they would one day create the Workshop. Together, they built the Workshop from the ground up.

Despite his frail body, Rancid is a surprisingly powerful necromancer in his own right. He is Grimoire's second-in-command and the most successful of her acolytes. Rancid has a whole host of zombies to assist him in his research, but his favorite is undoubtedly
Elegy, whom he views as a beloved daughter.
