Sandscale

Uh-oh, looks like this lil' earthy Tundra wandered a little too far from her home lair (#331710, Lemmonnade), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her to home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, HERE.

Sandscale's Journey:

Sandscale was a gentle soul, living out her life surrounded with her family deep inside the Everbloom Gardens. Unlike some other members of her clan, she never wished to leave, to travel, to study abroad or to fight long and harsh battles and emerge victorious. She was content with her life just the way it was and never wanted anything else to happen.

But as she grew into a young adult, her children grown and living lives of their own, she started having a strange dream that always started the same; walking down a path in a secluded garden filled with various plants, both known and unknown to her; stopping near a tree and someone calling her name. Then, it would abruptly stop and no matter how much she wished for it, it always happened at that one moment.

Still, after a few weeks of it happening almost daily, she realized that the dream was never quite the same; there was always a detail or two, barely seen in the corner of her eye, that changed. One time it was the color of a flower bush, other time her name was whispered and not called for loudly. Last time she had it, she could've sworn that the inside of the woods was darker and that the time of day was leaning more towards sunset than midday. It was like time passed inside the dream as well.

The night before she found herself completely and suddenly alone was the night when the dream changed the most. After the same scenes repeated for the hundredth time, she managed to turn her head towards the source. Deep in the forest, illuminated by what by now was bright moonlight, was a silhouette of something tall and bipedal. It repeated its call in a deep, silky voice, but Sandscale felt no fear, despite being faced with something unknown to her.

As always, the dream abruptly stopped but when she woke, she was not with her Clan anymore. She was in the forest, the moon was shining brightly like it did in her dream moments before, and the thick flower bush gently swayed in the wind to the left of her. But there was no silhouette in the far darkness nor was there a voice gently (or perhaps ominously?) calling her name.

But there was no one from the Clan in sight, either. Not her family, not her friends, nobody. It was like she sleepwalked to this unknown location that looked like a part of Viridian Labyrinth, but could also be almost anywhere else. Anxiety started building up inside her for this was actually the first time she ever separated from familiar faces, so in despair, Sandscale started wandering around, trying to find a way out of this mess...

She was always tired. No matter how much she slept - and now she didn't want to sleep - it was never enough. Her eyes always felt heavy, and her mind dull.

She drifted through her days without feeling much of anything. At first, the dragons who took her in tried to get her to engage with them - in particular a midnight-colored Snapper - but she just couldn't do it.

She was so tired.

Whispers echoed about her, and she shook her head, bewildered. The caverns about her were utterly unfamiliar. She was in a large room, riddled with scores of passageways.

"Where...?" For the first time in weeks - or months? - she was able to comprehend her surroundings. A graceful Skydancer glided up beside her.

"Welcome to the Court of Sighs! I am Elektra." She smiled, and Sandscale was startled to hear the words echoing through the room. "Merisea Haven welcomes any traveler with any need."

"How did I get here?" demanded Sandscale groggily.

"Some friend of yours brought you in, nearly dead of Shade exhaustion. It will take you a long time to recover, but the Court of Sighs is always open to you."

And, indeed, all was well once more... until she looked in a mirror.

After wandering some more, she found herself in the Arcane territory, with a clan that searched for a way to explore more skies than they could reach on their wings alone. Here, she hoped to find answers of the shade that had tired her so, for the first leg of her journey. She decided to stay a while, and aid this clan in their research.

The research was somewhat successful, with her spending most of her time in the Moonseekers with a dragon named Scamandros - an innocent yet powerful little fae that wanted to know everything. He and his friends liked her so much that they gifted her two things to travel with her - a mantle for something soft to sleep on, and a Dreameater to help her sleep more peacefully.

Sandscale awoke in what appeared to be a chair within the reading room of a library. As she blearily looked around, an old Imperial behind a desk at the front of the room looked up from his book "Ah, I see you're awake." Still a little sluggish and disoriented, Sandscale just blinked at him, perplexed. "My name is Jesse. I am the Head Librarian here. Some of our gate guardians found you passed out on the shore with the tide about to come in, so they brought you here so I could watch over you until you woke up. Might I ask your name?"

After a couple of failed attempts to speak, she was finally able to croak out "Sandscale." With her strength and awareness coming back, the little tundra got up on wobbly legs to take in the room she was in. Behind Jesse were bookshelves nearly twice his length in height stretching farther back than she could see; some of the shelves sagged from the weight of the books they were holding. As she looked around some more, she noticed that although the library was well lit with the soft glow of various lamps and candles, there was light dancing all around like how sunlight dances underwater. Sandscale's gaze shifted upwards, following the lights, and when she sees the walls and ceiling she gasps. Holes, or more likely windows, are scattered all over the library, and through these windows were creatures, sea creatures to be exact, lazily swimming by in the water.

As Sandscale turns her wide eyes back towards Jesse she asks, "Where am I?" The Imperial smiles gently at the shocked Tundra. "It's nice to meet you Sandscale. This, is The Library of Rainbow Waters. We are built into a large cave network beneath the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Our main entry is on the Fishspine Reef, close to where we found you, but we have entrances that reach deep into the Leviathan Trench; there's still so much we have left to excavate here too, it's quite the project..." Jesse trails off as if he's deep in thought, then glances as Sandscale. "But, we are more than a library. We are a hub for travelers, a sanctuary for gardeners, training grounds for Night Warriors, a second home to the abandoned, a final resting place for old dragons, and, most importantly, a research lab for the shade-touched."

With these final words, Jesse turns his piercing gaze upon Sandscale, making the little Tundra quiver at the intensity. "You may wonder why you were placed here under my watch, and not with our Inn Keeper Pumpkin; that is usually where newcomers to the library go. However, when our guardian found you, they were unable to rouse you. You were in an unnatural state of sleep, surrounded by tendrils of darkness. Your Dreameater was next to you absolutely beside itself trying to wake you..." At the mention of her companion Sandscale panics looking around, realizing they're not with her. "Don't worry about your companion," Jesse says, "they're in our garden playing with the other familiars of our clan. They are safe and sound." Hearing that, Sandscale relaxes, knowing her friend is safe "Although, we had to do a lot of convincing to get them to leave your side" Jesse chuckles "You have quite the loyal familiar there."

"But, back to the other topic. You, my dear, are shade-touched, were you aware?" "Yes" Sandscale replies, "At least, to a degree. I've never heard it be called shade-touched before. It started a year or two ago in my dreams, I lost my clan and have been wandering the world in a trance because of it. I've worked with others who took me in to help get it under control. The last place I left made a lot of headway on their research, and I thought I was at a point where I could control it, but I guess not. I have no memory of making it to the shore, only dreams." Sandscale hung her head in shame, worried that Jesse may kick her out for being a danger to the library and its inhabitants. "There's nothing to be afraid dear." Jesse says gently "Being shade-touched is out of your control. Luckily we have a dedicated laboratory for the research and cure of shade-touched individuals. Of course, you are not required to stay with us, nor participate in any research or experiments, but, you are a unique case and I know our head researcher, Rowan, would be delighted to work with you." After musing a bit on her options Sandscale agreed to work with the library's research team; she would do anything to get back home.

6 Years Later

Six long years has passed since Sandscale was first brought to The Library. During her time she became close to many dragons of the clan, but especially the scientists of the research lab. With the dedication of herself and the members of Shade Research Initiative (S.R.I.), they were able to discover the different effects The Shade had on Dragonkind. Most importantly, how Shade can affect a dragon physically, mentally, magically, or a mix of the three. For Sandscale, they found out The Shade affected her mind, which is why she was often in a trance-like state and her dreams were so vivid and at times bizarre. The connection between The Shade and the Dreameater had been made, but they did not have an answer for why the Dreameater (and other familiars) were not as affected by The Shade and why the Dreameater was able to partially defend Sandscale from the effects of The Shade.

Despite all this research, they still found no cure. But the S.R.I team were able to create everlasting enchanted flowers for Sandscale to wear that helped reduce the trances, mind fog, dreams, and even prevent The Shade from spreading to other dragons from her. Because of these breakthroughs, Sandscale unearthed memories of where her home was.

After months of sifting through the bits of memories she had gained, plus mapping out her journey, Sandscale was able to confirm the location of her clan she had unknowingly wandered away from all those years ago. It was bittersweet saying goodbye to the place she had called home for all these years with the family she had gained while here, but she knew her heart had always stayed with her clan back in the Everbloom.
