There’s a strength to Gale that not many notice straightaway. Underneath the soft fur and the kind green eyes, he’s as solid a leader as the Dandelion Clan could hope for.

He can usually be found crafting various kites, many of which are used around the lair as decorations or toys. Although he looks busy, he is always ready to lend a friendly ear. Those who approach him can be assured of a warm reception—and also many questions, for Gale was once a great traveler and is always eager to hear more about the lands beyond.

Gale was a Wind dragon born and raised. His first memory was of the breeze rushing through the trees, a song all on its own. Above him stretched the vast blue sky, dotted with lazily drifting kites.

The clan of kitemakers was a happy one, and Gale grew up surrounded by family and friends. These were the dragons who first guided his paws, teaching him how to turn wood and paper into something that could soar. Even without magic, there was something enchanting about it: that exhilarating rush whenever the wind plucked a kite from Gale’s grasp. It would rise higher, and Gale, watching it, would feel a strange yearning too.

When he spoke of his feelings, the clan elders smiled back, sad and warm all at once. “There have been those among us who felt the same way. They heeded the call: going where the wind took them, wandering like the breeze.”

Gale had never seen the world beyond. But it called to him now, like the sky calling out to a kite. Still, he was young, and so he couldn’t help asking, “Can I come back?”

“You will always be welcome,” said his clan, “for we never turn away any whom the wind brings to us.”

Preparations were made for the journey. Gale packed food, water, and kite-making supplies. It was the only trade he knew, and without a clan, he would need to earn his way. The thought didn’t make him too nervous. He was by no means naive, but excitement dampened whatever apprehension he might’ve had.

And then he set out into the great, wide, open world, like a kite set free at last.

The world beyond was full of wonder and beauty, but there were perils, too. Gale learned to hide when roc shadows covered the ground, to stay wary when he saw Beastclan tracks. There were monsters, hostile dragons, rogue spells...

The greatest danger of all, however, was the wind. Its rage could reduce everything to tatters. After one particularly vicious storm, Gale came across an injured Skydancer. He nursed her back to health, and for safety’s sake, they decided to travel together.

Life became more pleasant, now that he had a companion. Arwen was curt at first, but in time she warmed up to Gale, and their conversations became filled with laughter and cheer. Gale didn’t look forward to the day that they would part—but that day never came, for as it turned out, Arwen felt the same way about him. They settled down together, and around them, the Dandelion Clan grew.

“A word with you, Elder, if I may?”

“Of course, Mercury. And never mind this ‘clan elder’ stuff. It’s just Gale, remember?”

The young Imperial laughed quietly, and as he sat down, Gale looked fondly at him. Mercury had come to the clan as a hatchling. He had set his sights on serving the gods—and he had succeeded. It was a great honor for the clan to have one of their members chosen for exaltation. Soon he would be ready to leave.

“We’re proud of you, Merc. Not surprised, though. You showed promise even as a child; we knew you’d soon be heading for broader horizons.”

“You and Arwen were great teachers,” Mercury said, ducking his head in respect. “I wouldn’t have made it without your guidance.”

“You’ll travel far,” Gale predicted. His eyes grew distant, not with prophecy but with memory. He was seeing himself again, young and excited, eager to see the rest of the world...

Mercury spoke with him for a long time, asking for advice, for reassurance. Gale was happy to answer his questions, to share his own experiences and knowledge.

And finally, Mercury anxiously inquired, “What if I’m not good enough? What if they send me back?”

This, too, sounded familiar.

Gale’s smile was warm. “Then you will be welcome here,” he said, echoing the words of his own elders, long ago, “for we never turn away any whom the wind brings to us.”

zwZyxeB.png
Finally, it was time for the exalt to go. The clan priestess blessed Mercury, wafting fragrant clouds of incense around him. Arwen presided over the ceremony, and soon Mercury spread his wings and prepared to launch himself into the sky.

Not for Gale the ceremony, no fancy rituals and words. He stayed by his hollow tree, still busily working.

But his mind was very much with Mercury and all those who had gone before him. As the Imperial rose into the air, Gale raised his own paws. He held a kite aloft, and the wind took it as well, sweeping both it and Mercury skyward.

Long after the young exalt had gone, the kite remained, still hanging steadily in the breeze. A good omen—and Gale smiled, reassured at last.
