"Are-are you sure you want me?" Tashir sniffed. "I'm terribly ugly." Calla scooped the hatchling up in the air so she could look her in the eyes.
"Dear child, whoever told you something that ridiculous?"
Tashir hung there awkwardly, rather like a cat, and mumbled something about 'other kids'.
Calla clicked her tongue and pulled the little dragon into a hug. "Well then they need their heads examined. No one but you has the right to call you ugly, and while you're under my roof I forbid you to say such things about yourself as well. Besides, no one's ugly. Look at your shimmery wings, and your healthy scales! Ugly dragons don't have those. Mostly because ugly dragons don't exist, but that's beside the point."
Tashir didn't really understand what her new den mother was saying, but it made her feel better nonetheless.
"Even though my colors are weird?" Tashir asked.
"What's weird about them?"
"Well...they...I don't know..."
"Then there's nothing wrong with them!" Calla smiled. "Now let's introduce you to the clan..."

Calla panted as she handed Tashir the new familiar.
"Oh! Thank you so much!" Tashir cried, holding her claws out for the creature. Calla dropped the creature into her arms rather unceremoniously. Puzzled, Tashir asked the obvious question.
"What's wrong?"
Calla glanced at her bag, which had been heavier when she'd gone out, and just sighed. "Just know it's not your fault. You don't need to know the details. Just enjoy your beautiful flying deer thing..." Calla glared at Sandstorm suddenly, and Tashir decided that once again the great queen was right. She didn't need to know.

Shira was sitting by the pond, staring at her reflection. “I wish I wasn’t so ugly,” she sighed to herself.
“No you’re not,” said a voice behind her.
Shira frowned. The other voice was wrong, and since they didn’t have a reflection she assumed it was the last shred of hope in her mind trying to argue with her. “What do you know? The only good thing about being ugly is not having to see yourself unless you’re thirsty. You’ve got to look at me. That sounds terrible.”
“Then I’m the lucky one. I get to see you.”
Shira rolled her eyes, still glaring at her reflection as if it were the one speaking. She wasn’t sure who it was speaking, but she was less certain it was a voice in her head anymore. “That doesn’t make sense.” At last, she turned her head and shifted back in surprise. “...this is going to sound ridiculous, but I honestly thought I was talking to myself.”
Glace gave her a sad look. “Do you really think you’re ugly?”
“Yes?”
“That’s ridiculous!” he laughed. “Your colors are all over the place. You never look the same in the same light. It’s fascinating! You’re gorgeous!”
Shira didn’t know how to respond to that, so she looked back at the pond and looked at herself again. She watched Glace step forward and settle down next to her. She wasn’t sure if he was aware how close he’d sat to her.
“See, look at the way the pond reflects the scales on your face. Now turn your head a bit.” He beamed as she did as he suggested. “They’re all a completely different shade! That’s so cool!”
She tried to look at herself from the side. “Did you see me moping and just feel sorry for me?”
He looked confused, as if unable to understand how she could possibly think him ingenuine. “Of course not. It’s been bothering me for a while now, actually. You always look so sad.” He nudged her with his head. “Stop that. You’re the only one who thinks you’re ugly. You’re not.” It sounded like he were simply stating a fact, but he shuffled his feet in the awkward silence that followed in a way that made Shira wonder.
