Varda / Cygnus ferocious ; fair ; curious clan keeper and matriarch the lady of two names varda, varda, varda. The stars pulse, distant lighthouses on a shore of jet. A dragoness glides below, the feathers across her shoulders as pure as the stars above, her primaries seemingly brushed with gold. Those long wings, powerful, extend far outward, her long, narrow tail a rudder. She is almost like a ship in the darkness. Her toes just graze the crumbling stone of the ruins below her as she soars overhead. The rush of cool air sends chunks of limestone cracking to the ground below them, the sound of their skittering chasing the elegant flier as she moves away. varda, varda. When the dawn finally breaks over the vast stone pillars, she is seated at the peak of a high, pale wall, made of limestone. The golden light filters through thin cloud and pours across her domain. She watches the dragons stir below her, some of them on the cold stone, others hidden in caverns, others still at the treeline, the crystalline dew sticking to their scales and feathers. The day will be bright, yet their numbers dwindle. She can hear the slow clink of Aule at his forge somewhere below and away. The warmth of the day starts to sink in. varda. The sun stretches its loving fingers down. It heats the stone, livens the flowers, warms the little stream. The tablet at the dragoness's feet is covered in strange symbols, and she is working meticulously away at it. The translation is slow. Veritas has stopped by once already, with inquiring eyes. "Not yet," she had told him, "it's not ready yet," and he had nodded, moving graciously away. It was ancient, but not of dragon origin. Harpies, she suspected, and the more they knew about the harpies, the better they would fare in keeping their numbers low. "Lightweaver is smiling on us today," said a voice behind her, "with such bright light, and such gentle weather". The dragoness Galadriel was lyrical and high-pitched when she spoke, in contrast with Varda's low , gravelly tone. "It is beautiful, is it not?" "Indeed," Varda replies, "odd, since the night was so cold and so dark". "Ah," Galadriel says, "but at least we have your light to keep that dark at bay, Cygnus." |
 Varda, in Tolkien's world, was the wife of Manwe and was the Queen of the Valar. Of all the Valar, Melkor hated and feared her the most. Many Cygnuses appear in Greco-Roman mythology. One story tells of a Cygnus who was King of Ligûria, friend and possible lover of Phaëthon, killed by Zeus. The despairing Cygnus was turned into a swan to relieve his suffering, and was put into the sky by Apollo. In Clan Galad, Varda is the Keeper and Matriarch. She sits in the highest position of power, presiding over the High Council. Relationships As Matriarch, Varda is in good standing with most of the dragons in the clan. She is only friends, however, with a few: Galadriel, Mandos, and Irmo. Manwe is her love and co-ruler, and so he is her greatest friend of all. |
Story Varda was born at the edge of the Shifting Expanse hundreds of years ago. As a young dragon, she had several hatchlings which all made their way away from her, in time. She met Mandos while roaming through the Windswept Plateau. Each having never met another dragon so old, they decided to stay together. Age is a binding factor. It is hard to watch so many of one’s friends die when you will live for another millennia yet. She and Mandos came across Clan Galad when it was in shambles, with few living dragons left. The harpy raids either killed or drove away most of the other dragons, and Varda and Mandos decided to stay to build anew. Her steady guidance has served as a beacon for the clan as it starts to regain order. Old dragons were the first to come, slowly, one by one. Large, monoliths, those who had conquered time itself. When Manwe came, Varda felt it in her bones. |
