______ In dark nights in the Last retreat when the moon is high and the cold winds howl stories are told of the cursed firstborn Imperial of the Lair, the ghost named Soul that walks the woods at night. From the moment of his hatching the imperial was different; his striped skin was as cold and pale as ice and his wings the colors of old blood. Soul grew up a shy and paranoid dragon as where-ever he stepped misfortune seemed to follow. He became paranoid, claiming that he was followed by the shadowy shape of a black bat and whenever a misfortune occurred he claimed he saw it from the corner of his eye, drawing closer and closer. The imperial's tales were dismissed as hallucinations or excuses for clumsiness. He withdrew into the deepest parts of the lair and isolated himself, saying that the black bat had left a curse on him, that one who met his eyes would surely die. It could have only been an accident. They found the imperial the next day with a broken mirror and an equally broken neck. Shards of glass had cut his face, his arms and legs had been broken and perched on the imperial's branching horns the black furred shape of a Cursed Bat. The Lair's Healers bandaged his wounds and tried their best to stem the flow of blood but the Imperial known as Soul died that night and was cursed to remain bound to his earth. His curse drew the bad luck from the Lair, blessing it with peace and prosperity, and he is honored as a luck spirit by the last retreat.

______ If you wander late at night or descend into the deepest parts of the Lair you may find yourself face to face with this phantom. The signs of his approach are three, first you will see a glow of ghostly blue flames. Second a black shadow will pass your path as the Cursed Bat Omen flies ahead. Thirdly you will hear the sound of sobbing. Then it is too late to flee as the spirit of the cursed imperial himself will pass your path. If you should happen to meet this imperial ghost, draped in bloody bandages and with his face hidden under his hat, remember this. Soul does not wish you any harm, he will often flee to spare you misfortune. Speak kindly to comfort him. Do not look under his hat or his curse will be discharged on you for meeting his eyes. Carry on you a paper seal of good fortune to gift to him and you will receive a blessing of good luck in return.
