"Tis Death on the Wind"
Elementals, many folk agree, are dangerous, powerful beings who exist in a world beyond Sornieth, beyond, perhaps, even the deities. They were creatures of legend, of myths and warnings and hushed boastings, lest they hear. They were also, apparently, morbidly fascinated with death, had terrible taste in jokes, and were able to form themselves into whatever shape they pleased. Eulalia tried on several forms, in her first few weeks with Ista. She tried on the proud form of the Guardian, the precise delicacy of the fae. She tried the long snout of a male ridgeback; the horns of the pearlcatcher, though she could never quite replicate the pearl. She wore Gabriel's skin until it made him cry, and delighted in Daeshon's disbelief at the depths of his own eyes, but in the end, she favoured Denala's form above them all. Denala was elegant, as all skydancers were, but there was a gauntness to their features, a bony hollowness to their form that Eulalia found endlessly fascinating. So she fashioned it into herself. Gaunt faced, long-fingered, with blank, icy eyes and dappled sunlight in her wings, where Eulalia walked, folk watched. She held her head high, mimicked a smirk when she saw them, and melted through the water to the other side of the Sea. Often, when she appears, it is with a fragment of prophecy: "Roses in her hair," she will say to her startled audience; "Know them by the blood in their eyes." Often, these prophecies are not intended for her, nor even for her uneasy clanmates in Ista. She intercepts the words as she travels through the rain, and enjoys the salty taste of them in her teeth. Vela has scolded her for this, in the past. The prophecies, after all, are a magic unto themselves; who knows what happens to them once they have been absorbed. Is she not concerned that some great warning from the deities will go ignored because half the warning is missing? Eulalia answered with Minarkan's bristling grin. Good. |
