Caladorn is the youngest child of Gorebash and Tigerfly. As the youngest, he was very close to both of his parents, but he had a particularly special bond with his mother. From the moment he hatched, Caladorn imprinted on her and was always in her shadow as she moved around the lair. TigerFly would often jokingly ask Gorebash if they had nested in Shadow’s lands for Caladorn’s clutch because of his tendency to follow his mother and his purple-ish colors. Growing up, Caladorn learned all he could from his mother: her recipes, hunting methods, art techniques, anything he possibly could. He was inquisitive, and like a sponge – anything TigerFly shared with him he learned it. He took great delight in learning, not just from his mother, but from his father and from his siblings. Caladorn would watch the other dragons in the lair intently and learn from them as well. If his siblings discovered a new way to tackle a problem or a new place to find treats, Caladorn committed it to memory. His family was always surprised by how well he remembered even the smallest details. They would mention something in passing one day, and he would recall it months to years later. His brother Chronicle was particularly good at finding delicious treats, and he would always share with Caladorn. The activity that was Caladorn’s absolute favorite was scavenging for interesting and rare trinkets for his hoard. He would often go off alone and wander for hours, just searching for something that struck his fancy. Gorebash loved teaching his Bubbies everything he knew, and Caladorn was his best student. Late nights in the lair echoed with songs and stories shared by Gorebash, Tigerfly, Chronicle, and Caladorn.

Even when other Bubbies grew up and left the lair to seek their fortunes elsewhere, Caladorn stayed with Gorebash and TigerFly. That night, when TigerFly announced her intent to go into the service of the Lightweaver so she could be with majority of her Bubbies, was the hardest night of Caladorn’s life. He couldn’t bear the thought of being separated from his mother in such a permanent way, and he fled so he could process this loss.

It took him a very long time.

Gorebash was worried; his son had always been quiet and reserved, but he had become sullen and reclusive. He tried his best to support Caladorn, but also give him the space he needed. Gorebash would bring him food and water, make him small trinkets as gifts, and just be present with him without pressuring him to engage. It was very hard for Gorebash too, to lose his mate and the mother of his Bubbies. He went from having a happy, loving partner to having a deeply grieving son and being a single father. Chronicle took the loss hard as well, but he would also try very hard to help his brother. He would spend time with his brother, bribing him to eat with the treats he found.

Eventually, Caladorn found his way through the mire of sorrow and was able to rejoin his family. He would always carry that desolation, but he wasn’t going to let it drown him. One of the most important things he learned from Tigerfly was balance: of darkness and light, of companionship and solitude, and of joy and despair. Caladorn has had a few mates in his life, and unfortunately all but one of his many children has gone to the service of various deities. Only his second son Laudwine from his first clutch decided to stay with him, Gorebash, and Chronicle. This deeply saddened him and brought back those dark feelings that he had when TigerFly left. He feared that the mire would engulf him again, but the love of his family kept him afloat and kept him from losing himself.

Shortly after the end of the Brightshine Jubilee, Caladorn received word from Gorebash that he would be coming home with a very special guest. He had been visiting the lair of his birth to see his great great great great great granddaughter Sibirica and her mate Duskgrief as they brooded their first clutch. Since Sibirica and Duskgrief would be sitting on their nest, there was no way Gorebash could have meant them, so Caladorn was very confused about who would be visiting. He pushed his confusion aside and got Chronicle to help him tidy the lair and make sure that they had enough food for visitors.

Caladorn was thunderstruck when it was Sibirica, Duskgrief, and their four new Bubbies that came with his father. He approached his family and greeted them, ready to offer them hospitality when Gorebash stepped forward and pulled him aside. He asked Caladorn to sit down before he introduced him to the hatchlings. This was very odd to Caladorn, since it wasn’t as if he had never seen a Bubbie before – he had hatched many himself after all. He immediately became concerned that something had happened to one or all of them, which would be why they hatched so quickly and why Sibirica and Duskgrief would have brought them here - for help.

Before Caladorn could continue to spiral into what-ifs, Sibirica calmly held up her firstborn daughter and introduced her. “This is Sable.” None of the other dragons appeared to be upset, so Caladorn took a deep breath and greeted the Bubbie. “Hello Sable!” Sable ignored Caladorn, more interested in her firefly friends. Sibirica gently put Sable down and picked up her second daughter. “This is BrightDelight.” Caladorn greeted her in the same way as her sister. BrightDelight was much more social than Sable. She burbled a response to Caladorn and gave him what might have been a smile. Sibirica had a hard time catching her next daughter, the hatchling kept slipping through her paws. What was odd was the Bubbie wasn’t squirming or trying to escape, her mother just couldn’t keep a paw on her. She seemed to flow, like mist, through her mother’s fingers. Sibirica finally caught her, however briefly, and showed her to Caladorn. “This one is Palemist.” She said with a chuckle as the hatchling quickly slipped away, pooling around her father’s feet. Caladorn couldn’t help but laugh as well, he hadn’t seen a hatchling like that before! Sibirica looked to Gorebash, who nodded that it was time to show Caladorn the final hatchling. Sibirica reached back and pulled the final Bubbie from her hiding spot on her mother’s back and held her up for Caladorn to see.

“This is TigerFly.”

Caladorn’s heart nearly stopped in his chest. He crept forward slowly, he couldn’t believe his eyes. He was nearly nose-to-nose with the hatchling when his legs finally locked up and held him in place. He was frozen.

“Mom?”

The hatchling’s eyes met his and suddenly he was the hatchling again, tears flowing from his huge eyes. The Bubbie looked EXACTLY like his mother TigerFly; the resemblance was uncanny. As Caladorn sank slowly to the ground, Gorebash gently took the hatchling from Sibirica and placed her next to him. Duskgrief watched carefully, unsure how Caladorn would interact with his daughter given his deep grief over the loss of his mother. He was skeptical about whether his daughter was really his long-gone dragon returned, but he respected that his family believed that. Caladorn shakily placed a paw on hers, not believing she was real until he touched her. The hatchling looked at him with compassion, and Caladorn could see in her eyes that his mother was there.

She really had come back to them, just as she promised.

Caladorn was always a very deep sleeper. His parents had such a hard time waking him, that sometimes they worried there was something wrong with him. But he would wake just fine, and tell them such tales of his adventures, that they eventually stopped worrying. As he grew, he didn’t grow out of the long naps that hatchlings would take. Caladorn would spend nearly as much time in the Dreamlands as he would in the waking world. In the wake of TigerFly’s exaltation, Caladorn retreated to where he felt safest – the Dreamlands. He would walk the endless paths there and forget. Forget his pain. Forget his family.

He met her in his dreams.

She was always there, in the corner of his eye. Following a dragonlength behind Caladorn, she was his constant companion. Offering silent support to a dragon she saw was hurting. When Caladorn tried to turn to get a better look at her, she would disappear. Every time he woke, he thought he could still see her. Just for a moment. Sometimes, when Caladorn was having a particularly rough day and he walked the darker paths of the Dreamlands, he could hear echoes of song that brought him back to the light, guided by a luminous butterfly.

The day he met TigerFly II was exhausting for him, physically and emotionally. It was not difficult at all for Caladorn to slip into a deep slumber. It didn’t take long for her to come to him, soft humming song accompanying her arrival. Instead of wandering the paths he would normally travel, he stopped on a grassy hill and sat down, his butterfly friend sitting in its customary place on his nose. He waited for her to catch up to him before he addressed her.

“Don’t leave me, please.”

And she didn’t. When he turned back, she was there. When he woke, she was there. In his heart, she was there.
