Oneironaut was always a quiet, calm, and introspective dragon. He knew from a young age that he didn't always fit in. His clutchmate Finnegan was charismatic, fun, funky, and had a personality that lit up a room and drew people toward him. Oneironaut was different; he often found himself sitting quietly in the corner reading books. When he wasn’t reading, Oneironaut was usually sleeping. Like his father, he spent long portions of the day deep in sleep. He had a vivid imagination and loved building make-believe worlds. When sitting with his parents at dinner, Oneironaut would tell stories of visiting these worlds. Caladorn and Dreamweaver were troubled by this initially, as they knew Oneironaut had not been out of the lair. Oneironaut just smiled and explained that he would visit his imaginary worlds in his dreams where they were very real, and he could make anything he wanted. Oneironaut had been gifted with his mother's ability to not just walk the dream realm, but influence it, interact with it, and shape it in a way that very few could. Oneironaut found himself so enticed with the dream realms, that it caused him to be somewhat isolated and withdrawn in the waking world. In a family with many energetic and animated Spirals, it would have been easy for Oneironaut to fade into the background, but his parents always went out of their way to have special time with him. As a hatchling, Oneironaut was particularly fond of his mother. He didn't seek her out often, but when she was in the room, he was always in the seat closest to her. Dreamweaver used to read him stories about Windswept Plateau where the Spirals originated. He treasured those stories and would use material from them to craft his dreams. Perhaps it was this fondness for the wind realms that led Oneironaut to later choose a mate from a wind Clan. As an adult, Oneironaut would ask his mate Hyacinth to share stories of her home lair, just as his mother had when he was young. He and Hyacinth passed these stories on to their own bubbies over the years. Each time a story was told, Oneironaut felt a sense of nostalgia, both for his childhood, and something else that he couldn’t place. Growing up, Oneironaut loved to be near his mother always, but especially during the changing of the seasons when her feathered wings would molt. He cherished her feathers and would often collect them as they fell from her wings. He would use them for anything from bookmarks to room decor, and even made a blanket from them that he carried with him. Caladorn and Dreamweaver took many adorable photos of Oneironaut as a hatchling with his mother's feathers taped over his own leathery wings. He used to beam and say one day, he would grow feathers too. As Oneironaut grew older, he bonded more with his father. Caladorn was also quiet and reserved for a Spiral, which was relatable, but as Oneironaut matured he began to understand that there was a pain in his father’s eyes. He occasionally noted the same in his mother. Although neither parent ever expressed their pain to the Bubbies, or expected anything from them, Oneironaut could sense there was a lot of sadness in their histories. Oneironaut was never one to pry, but he had an innate sense for when others were hurting. Oneironaut spent many evenings curled up with his father in a tangle of their long bodies, just simply being together. Oneironaut was also a gifted listener and had a natural understanding of what others were feeling. His empathy ended up helping him to make many friendships as he aged. Oneironaut was so talented at listening and understanding that he was frequently brought in to mediate conflict both within the lair and outside of it. With time and maturity, Oneironaut's inherent empathy and interpersonal aptitude developed into skillful proficiencies that he considered turning into a vocation. He was able to not only repair conflict in the waking world, but also provide personal healing by using his talents in the dream realm. Oneironaut learned to telepathically dream with others and shape their nightmares into therapeutic and restorative fantasies. He helped many dragons reach peace both interpersonally and intrapersonally. However, as much as Oneironaut understood about others, he struggled to find the same understanding and fulfillment within himself. After much thought and reflection, Oneironaut called the whole family together to make an announcement: he would be making a pilgrimage to the Windswept Plateau; he wanted to understand the sense of nostalgia he felt when stories of the wind realm were shared. Gorebash was the first to react. He jumped up and hugged his grandson tight and wished him well on his journey. His uncle Chronicle offered Oneironaut plenty of the best treats to feed him on his journey. Mahalath gave Oneironaut heirloom tea leaves to take with him in case he got homesick or needed to make friends. Dreamweaver and Caladorn hugged their son close; they hugged so long that soon they ended up all curled up in a pile, just like when Oneironaut was young. They told him that although they would miss him dearly, they couldn't wait to hear about his travels. Caladorn hoped that Oneironaut would be able to find the wellness in himself that he had helped so many others to achieve. Dreamweaver gifted her son a few of her recent feathers that she had just shed; she had put them in a bag and saved them for him. Hyacinth kissed him tenderly on the forehead, as his children each gave him affectionate hugs and well wishes. Hyacinth shed a tear as she shared how proud of him she was, and how lucky she was to be his mate. She wrapped him in her own feathery embrace and promised to look after the lair for as long as he needed. Oneironaut knew he would miss her dearly and promised to come home to her soon. He thanked his family for their constant love and support, before one last giant group hug. The next morning, Oneironaut began his travels. It was a longer journey than he had anticipated but when he arrived at the Windswept Plateau, he was astounded by its beauty. His first stop was the Zephyr Steppes, the ancestral home of the Spirals. Oneironaut spent days there flying with hatchlings and reading all about the history of his people. He experienced great joy there as he carefully selected gifts to bring back to each member of his family, yet Oneironaut still had not found what he was seeking. In his reading, Oneironaut was intrigued to learn that Spirals were not the only modern dragons to come from the Windswept Plateau; Skydancers began there as well. Oneironaut decided to leave the Zephyr Steppes to explore the Reedcliff Ascent, the ancestral home of the Skydancers. The Reedcliff Ascent was stunning with its bamboo covered cliffs. Oneironaut stopped to admire a particular plant, when he spotted something on the ground—a feather. He picked it up and examined it closer. It wasn't quite like the feathers from his mother's wings or his mate's; the shape and texture were different. He was beginning to wonder if there was a harpy clan nearby when he heard a soft, gentle voice, "You're confused. What is it that you wonder about?" Oneironaut turned to see an elder Skydancer. She smiled at him softly, "I'm sorry if I startled you, I could feel your bewilderment and hoped to assist." The old woman introduced herself as the Matriarch of a clan of Skydancers. Oneironaut talked extensively with this Matriarch about her breed and their culture. He was shocked to learn that much like him, Skydancers are gifted with an intrinsic ability to read and understand the emotions of others. The Matriarch also explained the feather had belonged to her, and she had recently molted. She showed Oneironaut her wings: feathers on top of a leathery wing. In amazement, Oneironaut pulled out a photo of him with feathers taped to his own leathery wings. The two laughed at how much he looked like a Skydancer hatchling in the photo. "I feel a kinship with you that I have never felt for someone who is not a Skydancer," the Matriarch told him. Oneironaut nodded silently, he too had never felt this close with anyone outside of his own family. He sensed that she knew this even without him speaking. Oneironaut paused, then pulled out the bag of his mother's feathers. With an almost maternal affection, the Matriach helped him adhere the feathers to his wings once again. Then they sent up a prayer to the Windsinger. At first nothing happened, and Oneironaut closed his eyes as he felt a profound disappointment; then he felt that feeling echoed back at him from the Skydancer. This echo he felt was stronger than any empathic intuition he had ever felt before. It was so strong it began to physically manifest with a pulsing and throbbing on his forehead. It was unlike any headache Oneironaut had ever experienced before and as it reached up in pain, he felt a hard stone like protrusion on his forehead. Alarmed, Oneironaut shot his eyes open, only to realize he was hovering above the ground in a whirlwind. He attempted to gain control of his flight by wriggling his body, but he was unable to do so. As he thrashed down to the ground, he stared at his own arms in astonishment; his elbows were covered in fur. He looked over the edge of the nearby cliff and saw his reflection in the water. The eyes he knew as his own, but they were on a new face. Full of wonder, Oneironaut realized his prayers to the Windsinger had been answered. He also felt the sense of fulfillment that he had been seeking from this journey and knew it was finally time to come home. Oneironaut returned home to Hyacinth, who almost didn't recognize her mate. As soon as she heard him speak, she ran to embrace him. Oneironaut had gifted her with a bouquet of favorite flowers and a beautiful, jeweled necklace. He told her all about his journey as they snuggled together. He then thanked her for her support, and promised to return the favor and watch over the family while she had her own adventure. The bubbies, hearing their father, came running in and received their gifts of pinwheels, balloons, and toys while excitedly looping all around their dad's new body. Each year, Oneironaut and Hyacinth make a journey back to the Reedcliff Ascent to visit with the Matriarch. She takes great joy in hearing about each new bubbie and every exciting story about the family. She has become much like a second mother to Oneironaut and Hyacinth, and has journeyed to their home in the Wiretangle Walk. Oneironaut is especially grateful to her for the role she played in helping him to find his own inner peace. | . |
