She had grown complacent.

She couldn't remember much of her life before meeting her mate (her then-mate? Her former mate?), it is simply unfocused in her mind's eye. When she thinks of it she remembers mostly haze and fog. The memories become more clear after Azimuth came into her life. She does not recall meeting him though, she simply remembers feeling a pull towards him and relentless urge to follow him wherever he went.

So, she did.

The pair had several clutches together, and he was a noble, caring mate. He provided for the young and kept them safe. They tried to govern the small clan that had started to form, but being so young and unfocussed, Zira found it hard to do so. Eventually she and her mate slipped to the wayside as more powerful dragons took up residence in the clan.

Time passed and Zira's concern for her clan and herself deteriorated further. There are times when she looks back, still, and remembers nothing from this time in her life. She was simply existing, but not living. Eventually she reached a point where she knew she needed to make a change, and sought the insight of a few different masters of potions, alchemy, mages, seers and fortune tellers. Many of them promised happiness and an end to the void she felt within, and finally she decided to try the magic of the Scatter. She though perhaps new colors for her hide and wings might make her feel better?

The first scatter produced less than desirable results. It was an improvement from her washed-out cool coloured hide, but her wings were a shade of something that made her snout wrinkle upon seeing it. So she decided to try another. After scrounging her gold she visited the seller of the scroll and purchased a second. This time, a shade of green that she knew she could not live with. It was tiring too; the magic produced a chill that coursed through her body from the tip of her snout to the tips of her wings and end of her tail. It lingered. Even with the bright sun shining down upon her she felt chilled to the bone.

And not any happier for it.

Several more times she scraped together the funds to try the scatter again. Again and again without reaching something that spoke this is it. It was either too jarring, too similar, or too green (again, why?) before she finally ceased. Seven scatters until she reached a combination that she wasn't terribly pleased with, but one that was acceptable. Maybe the addition of some patterning upon her hide would help?

One change to her wing patterning had already occurred, and she will admit that she's always loved the way it shone, regardless of color. This change had been quite the investment, so she has vowed to keep it, regardless of other patterns she may find herself longing for. Other magical patterns and markings had been developed over time as well, and found herself watching and waiting, planning for the perfect ones.

All this time she hadn't ever felt right in her body either. She had heard tales on the wind of dragons who had become something else entirely. A whole new breed and the thought stayed with her. Dare I become something new? She pondered for a long while, and eventually had made her decision. Born a Mirror dragon, she was now choosing to become something completely new - a Skydancer.

This process was the most exhausting and invigorating of all. It tickled and hurt at the same time, brought pleasure and pain as her body twisted and changed, some features vanishing and others becoming new. Leathery hide turned to short, dense fur. Her wings and tail sprouted feathers and the crest upon her head turned to feathers as well. The most jarring change was the conflict within her, as her fierce and sometimes aggressive nature turned to one of observance and understanding. She felt more composed and poised, but often felt that primal instinct to run and hunt. Flying was much more enjoyable, and her new found freedom did lighten her spirits. She felt more regal, and for the first time in a long time - more alive.

Throughout all of this, the clan carried on around her. Many came and went, some found their calling within the clan, others not. A move occurred as well, the clan relocating from the Windswept Plateau to the Tangled Wood. It was a bit cooler, more private and felt a little bit more comfortable. Here, there were quite a few dragons that found their place nestled in the woods.

Zira sensed something though. Not unease persay, but a sense of anarchy, of no direction. There wasn't any real leadership for the clan either, those in charge simply self-appointed thanks to their strength and prowess. The Mirror-turned-Skydancer, now feeling more connected with herself and her path, knew that someone would have to step up and bring order back to the clan. With or without the help of her mate, she knew she would have to make her presence known, and challenge anyone who may stand in her way.

It was time for her to retake her clan.
