Balthazar Generalissmo of the Workshop Army Status: Alive Bitter | Taciturn | Revenge-Driven | Old | Tough Years ago, Balthazar served as one of the Plaguebringer's top generals. He fought and defeated dragons from all 12 of the Flights. For many of his battles, he relied on the skills of Trauma - a world renowned combat medic. However, Trauma kept many secrets from Balthazar. In truth, Trauma was a necromancer who resurrected fallen soldiers against the Plaguebringer's wishes. Balthazar often lost hundreds of fighters per battle, but Trauma restored them to "life", making it look like Balthazar had won without a single casualty. When Balthazar discovered Trauma's deception, he felt massively betrayed. He tried to hide the truth from his fellow soldiers. However, no secret can remain that way forever. As punishment for his lies, Balthazar was expelled from the ranks of the Plaguebringer's armies. Rejected by his Flight, Balthazar decided that the only way to restore his honor was to find Trauma and kill her. He spent years hunting his former ally, but it seemed as though she had disappeared. Even in hiding, Trauma heard rumors of Balthazar's relentless search for her. Terrified for her life, she begged Grimoire for protection. Grimoire sent her most deadly enforcers, the Butcher Brothers, to eliminate the threat. Unfortunately for the Brothers, Balthazar was a seasoned fighter. He brought the Brothers back to Grimoire in chains and demanded that she surrender Trauma to him. If not, he would kill everyone in the Workshop. To Trauma's horror, Grimoire accepted his terms. The doctor was bound and gagged and placed on a chopping block. With a swing of his battleaxe, Balthazar lobbed off the Imperial's head. However, Trauma's death did not last long. With a single spell, Grimoire brought her head doctor back to life. Balthazar quickly realized the flaw in the deal he had struck. Grimoire agreed to let him kill Trauma, but she never agreed not to resurrect her. Grimoire chuckled and told Balthazar he could kill Trauma as many times as he liked. Balthazar saw that his entire quest had been in vain. He collapsed on the ground in despair. Recognizing his potential, Grimoire made Balthazar an offer. She had ambitions of challenging the Dragon Gods and she needed an army. If Balthazar became her generalissimo, she would give him a chance to take revenge on the Flight that cast him out. Seeing no other recourse, Balthazar reluctantly accepted the job. He still serves as generalissimo to this day. When not training soldiers, Balthazar spends much of his time reflecting on the events that brought him so low. He often seeks advice and confession from Blister, a devoted Plague cultist. She cannot absolve him of his sins, but she does her best to provide him comfort. He still despises Trauma, but he will begrudgingly work with her if the situation calls for it. |
