HIGH PRIESTESS

Though Arvarinar welcomes all who come with only good intention and light in their hearts, it was not the fate of many to be born and raised on this island. But Celevon and Cenedril
had decided long ago to stay and nest here, and thus a daughter was born. Calithilien lived the most sheltered life. Her childhood was that which others in Sornieth would have deemed only a dream: she was able to play beneath enchanted trees, to dance with moths and fireflies in the summer twilight, to sing with fragile little birds when spring came. She became a friend to perytons and ghosts, and learned the most gentle things: to sing and dance, to speak and read the languages of Sornieth, to write tales of ages long past, to listen to those whose heart was filled with sorrow. It was thus that she was deemed worthy by both her father and the Herald himself to become the highest priestess of the temple of the Golden Crow. What that meant was not so clear to her at the time - the only remaining priest was her own father, for the others had left or died. Those who lived in the redwood shrine - which she often visited, learning of astronomy and the elements through Seimei and becoming his close friend - tended to their own shrine, and only helped to rebuild the temple, not fulfill priestly duties. So to her, there was never a hierarchy and never a community of priests, but that did not mean she would not fulfill her task most ardently. Thus, she fulfilled that which no one had done in a long while: lighting holy fires, offering incense, copying scriptures and composing hymns. The Herald, meanwhile, remained frozen - a sight that often made her feel insecure in her task at first, but became common to her soon after. |

It seemed strange to her, that, although the stories told of this island as a great center for those whose faith lay in Lightweaver, none of them still were there. She knew of the Shade and its threat, but she still wished that she could sing her hymns with others, those who came from wide and far, as the stories told.
And it was to be almost so. For the first time in hundreds of years, dragons came to visit the island again, and the teachings of golden light returned to Sornieth again. When the first group came to visit, Calithilien was ecstatic and tried to greet them in the most kind way possible. She offered to show them around and explain everything to them. They seemed confused by meeting a dragon of such age with a spirit that seemed so young, and only then Calithilien realised that the world was much greater than the island of Arvarinar, and that many dangers lay beyond it. Meanwhile, the other dragons showed much confusion regarding the dragons that lived here, and their vulpine and sylphen nature. For a while then, Calithilien hoped that this would be the start of the temple returning to its former greatness. She spent her free time trying to get to know these dragons, which wasn't always easy. But there was one lone dragon who came one stormy day that seemed special to her. When he arrived, he was close to breaking down, had tattered wings and was weakened by his travels through the stormy woods. Calithilien tended for his wounds and let him rest in her home until he was feeling better again. When he opened his eyes, he could not speak at first, but there was love between them even then. Though it first wasn't clear what this dragon's aim had been, he soon proved his worth and was appointed to the task of high priest alongside Calithilien. Nowadays, she spends most of her time with either Calardan or those she considers her teachers, Seimei and Neldarvan. The Sages are most dear to her, and she tends for the island well, caring as well for the animals and plants around the temple. She has become a friend to the magpies that visit this place, and it is said she understands their language as well. Her most favoured duty is that of writing down the stories of all dragons that come to visit this place, mostly those of Neldarvan, whose knowledge she admires greatly. |
