Mary is a career housewife who is fiercely protective of her husband Tom and, to a lesser extent, her children Tom Jr. and Sandy. She is ready at any time of night or day to rush to her husband's side and rescue him from whatever experiment-gone-wrong is threatening him this week. It's a full-time hob, but someone has to do it. Her children, fortunately, require much less protection. Mary's involvement in their lives (other than the occasional family dinner) consists of delivering sandwiches and complaining about their eating habits and Sandy's language. The only difference in her consideration is the difference between a Guardian's instinct for her charge and a mother's instinct to micromanage her kids. Mary and Helen grew up together and have been close friends since childhood. |

Most Guardian/charge relationships aren't as dramatic and fraught with peril as the movies make it seem. Most are normal, healthy, and contain more casual bickering than heroic rescues. Mary and Tom's is unfortunately not typical, but that's what you get for marrying a mad scientist. |

Mary and Helen grew up together in Square Toe and have been close friends for as long as they can remember. Though they were real troublemakers in their teens, the most these two get up to these days is bothering their daughters and daughter-in-laws (their kids are dating each other. Convenient!) about grandhatchies. Or so appearances suggest- on real boring days they may take a bottle of fruit wine and sleep out in Helen's orchard, reminiscing and making mischief. |
