SQUARE TOE

Highland Scrub

KBDQASr.png

It's obvious to any visitor that the city of Square Toe was once much larger and more prosperous than it is now. The ornate buildings, either repurposed or fallen into disrepair, cracked streets leading to places that were never built, and the general air of age that hangs over the area all contribute to the feeling of a clan that is much older than any of its inhabitants.

Origins
KBDQASr.png

No one is certain just who discovered the lake; some nameless prospector may have tripped and fallen inside the then-nameless mountain only to land with a splash when she expected a splat. Perhaps they were a water diviner for a trade caravan, searching for a meager oasis and finding themselves surprised beyond their wildest dreams. Whoever they were, their discovery was repeated over and over, first as a curiosity and then as a miracle. Water, hundreds and thousands of gallons of water, hiding below a pile of rocks in the desert!

In no short order, opportunists, entrepreneurs, and hopefuls of all kinds descended upon the mountain. They built a town, then a city, filled with beautiful buildings of quarried desert rock. They planted orchards and stocked the lake with fish- and very soon became rich. Fresh fruit and seafood in the desert are more valuable than gold.

For a few years the clan grew larger and richer. They planted gardens and erected art and some (but not all) of the dragons living there became very wealthy indeed.

Of course, the lake was no ocean and while deep, it was not bottomless. The water, badly mismanaged, began to recede, and as it went, so did the clan. As the pumps went dry and the fish harder to catch, the richer inhabitants drifted away. When the trees in the orchards lost their leaves, so went those with family elsewhere. In the end, the buildings fell into disrepair, the desert filled up with ghosts, and everything else got smaller smaller and dustier and dustier until the only ones left were the ones who had nowhere else to go.

Present Day
KBDQASr.png

Of course, that was hundreds of years ago. Things are better now. Without such heavy use, the water has been able to replenish itself. It's nowhere near the original levels, but there's enough to safely sustain a citrus orchard and vineyard or two. Or harvest some of the seafood that's been multiplying in the lake since it was brought there so long ago.

The descendants of the original inhabitants work and live in modest homes in the shadow of grand buildings rotted with age. There are newcomers as well. Some of them came because of the water, but most of whom came for other reasons: searching for something, fleeing something else.

The clan isn't rich and likely never will be, but they get by. They always have.

Points of Interest
KBDQASr.png

The center of Square Toe is the mountain and under that, the lake. The only entrance is a steel door dug a fair ways up to the mountainside, accessible by a carved stone path. It serves the dual purpose of keeping the moisture in and intruders out, and there is nearly always a caveguard on duty. Inside, the cave consists of a wide, sloping corridor lit by phosphor lanterns that gradually leads down to water level. Though pains have been taken to keep the the cave as close to a natural state as possible, you can't mistake the small boats tethered to a wooden pier, the gently gurgling and meticulously rust-free water pipes, nor the distinctive stench of Bruc's mushroom patches on ledges above the water.

There is no path to the top of the mountain (or butte, if you insist on being accurate. The inhabitants do not.) A visitor has to fly up to visit the SSMC broadcasting station, a ramshackle building whose huge satellite dish is barely supported by the rusting tin roof. Ken keeps his telescopes up here as well, all the better to watch stars on a cloudless night.

The library is the largest building in town, even if it doesn't appear so. It's built straight into the mountain and not even Josie is sure how far back the corridors go. Besides books, most of the government (such as it is) and other administrative types have their offices there. Other notable places in town include a law office, a doctor, a couple of taverns, a greenhouse, a statue garden that no can agree on the location of, and many, many empty buildings. By unspoken agreement, the lived-in section of town, with its wood-slat sidewalks and curtains in the doorways, is clustered as closely around the library as possible. The rest of the sprawl is left largely alone.

The outskirts somehow seem more alive. There is a farm sporting sun-dried but healthy produce, a vineyard, the power plant, a workshop (Tom's), and several small huts occupied by dragons who enjoy solitude and don't mind building their own homes.

All this is surrounded by desert, for as far as the eye can see. Nothing there but scrubs and rock columns, maybe an arch or two... and ghosts.
