The clan’s dragons were respected and feared even by their foes, generation after generation of lords and warriors maintaining that status. Unfortunately, as centuries passed, one of their highly esteemed values faded and the once-important sense of humility was overshadowed by arrogance and greed. The clan became cruel and where it once would have helped others in need, it would snicker at their misfortune and relish its own wealth. It was inevitable that the clan’s cruelty would one day target the wrong victim and bring misery upon itself. And so it did. On that dire day, after a Uesugi clan member refused to give food to a starving dragon on the street, the beggar turned out to be a witch who laid a terrible curse on the family. From that day on the clan would suffer misery and misfortune for generations to come, cursed until the Uesugi would show true remorse and repent of their past sins. It didn’t. And thus, avoided by the rest of dragonkind out of fear to draw the curse upon itself, the lineage slowly went extinct. Sickness had slimmed-down the lineage to only a few remaining clan members when Satori was born into it. From early childhood on he suffered the loneliness of belonging to a cursed, avoided family, and when he was old enough to understand the stigma his family bore, he decided to do something about it. His parents, too, had been weakened by the Wyrm disease but, while they did not believe that one dragon could possibly lift the curse after all this time, they supported his endeavour. Taught whatever knowledge the family’s respectable library had to offer and trained to be the best soldier he could be, the last heir of the Uesugi family set out into the world to make a difference. ________________________________________ |

When all dragons refused him shelter and food out of fear of his family’s curse, the young heir was disheartened. He wondered what he had done to deserve such treatment and, out of strength, Satori collapsed in the forest near yet another village that had denied him help. When he came back to his senses, he found himself in a warm stable covered in an old blanket and next to a few berries he instantly devoured to calm him aching stomach. Satori wondered who had brought him there. No one seemed to be around. The heir stood and walked out of the stable in search of his savior, though the glade and surrounding forest seemed empty save for the few forest animals that scampered through the snow. Nevertheless he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was being observed. Satori decided to search the forest for the dragon who had rescued him - in vain, how he would later realize - but the feeling of being followed prevailed, even as he continued his journey through the Southern Icefield. Time and time again Satori offered his services to dragons, time and time again he was turned down and sent away. But despite his bad luck, he couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching over him, since he would always find food when hunger started to make him dizzy and shelter when his vision began to close in. ________________________________________ |

In their current state they were easy to deal with regardless of their number. Satori delivered them to the clan in authority of the territory and, for the first time, was met with gratitude for the bandits had troubled the area for quite some time now. Satori was glad to have helped and carried on his way, the magic creature by his side no longer hiding in invisibility. It did not talk though, and so he resorted to calling it Kori. Satori left the Southern Icefield and wandered North. He passed one region after the other, helped wherever help was needed and defended the weak whenever he witnessed injustice. The longer his travels carried on, the easier it became for him to find food, shelter and people to help, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that his flying companion had something to do with it. He still didn’t understand why Kori was assisting him on his journey, however, and hoped to learn more about the creature eventually. When Satori entered the Sunbeam Ruins he did not know nor expect that his journey would end there. He went on his usual business to serve those in need, when he stumbled across a clan that was struggling against weird, mythical creatures that came crawling out of a nearby cave. Apparently the clan had been trying to fight the vicious creatures back into the cave for a few weeks now and thus Satori decided to stay and assist it the dragons. It was when the clan’s medium Victoria unexpectedly pulled him to the side and addressed his companion that the Skydancer would first learn about Kori’s true nature. ________________________________________ |
