"EEP!"

Bubbles, Part 1, Interlude
???

~

“Trust me, Your Majesty, he’ll make a perfect addition,” Bogatyr said, grinning beneath his wolf’s mask.

“I don’t doubt your judgement, I’m just concerned about...him,” Kelpbeard countered.

“He’s quite agile, and faster than even Aerico or Pierce.”

“Not to mention—” Kelpbeard paused suddenly when another draconian shape walked stiffly in their direction. The pale green eyes of the other dragon totally round and trying to avoid their eye contact.

Bogatyr remained silent until the third dragon was nearly beside them. “Bub—”

“AH!” the Spiral shrieked, almost leaping straight into the air.

“—bles, I have a proposal for you,” Bogatyr said to him, placing one orange paw on the young drake’s shoulder. The Nocturne didn’t seem to notice or mind the Spiral’s shaking form.

Bubbles gulped before he could find his voice. “O-oh? What’s th-that?”

“How would you feel about becoming the clan’s first scout?”

Bubbles froze, his jaws agape and he stared from from the expectant Nocturne to Kelpbeard. The grey Guardian was looking him up and down with one scaled brow cocked. What should Bubbles say? What if he said ‘no’? What would they do if he said ‘no’? Oh but he didn’t want to say—

“Sure,” the scrawny Spiral squeaked out.

“That’s the spirit!” Bogatyr exclaimed jovially, his fangs flashing in a smile as he clapped Bubbles on the back, and the young Spiral stiffened again at the touch. “What did I tell you?” the orange Nocturne said, turning back to Kelpbeard. The two turned around to walk the other way, leaving Bubbles behind. “Nerves of steel, that one.” He then hoped the king didn’t hear the soft thud that sounded behind them.

“Only because he’s too terrified to say otherwise,” the Guardian mumbled, striding beside him.

“He’ll overcome it eventually.”

“He fainted again, didn’t he?”

Bogatyr held up one claw and opened his jaws to protest, but soon slumped his shoulders in defeat and turned around to see where Bubbles had been standing.

The Spiral was now sprawled out across the stone floor, unmoving except for the steady rising and falling of his skinny chest.

Bogatyr faced Kelpbeard again, and he sent the grey Guardian an innocent smile.

Bubbles, Part 2, Interlude
Unhappy Birthday.

~

His heart pounded wildly against his ribs. He struggled to slow his rapid breathing and his pale green eyes were round with terror as dragons all around sung softly to him.

His birthday.

Which meant…

The lean body of Bubbles froze when a large cake was set in front of his view. Atop its frosted surface sat striped beeswax candles. Their flames danced warningly. He gulped as he stared at the glowing forms.

“Well?” he heard somdrake say, but Bubbles didn’t dare look away to see who it was.

He knew everydrake was expecting him to blow them out and make a wish, but what if he blew the wrong way? What if the fire stretched out and reached for somedrake’s scales? What if what if what if rang through his skull until he finally decided on a single wish. He drew in a shallow breath—

“You’re not just going to wish for everything to be fireproof again, are you?” Rocky asked from across the table.

—and Bubbles released it as slowly as he could. The flames just barely flickered and he sent every dragon an apologetic grin as they groaned in exasperation.

Minutes passed. Some dragons voiced complaints in hunger and became frustrated that the wax was beginning to melt into the frosting. But Bubbles remained as firm as he possibly could. Though it was highly unlikely, everydrake had said to him dozens of times, he didn’t want to risk any dragon getting burns or any part of the castle catching fire. It could happen, however small that chance was, he didn't want to take it.

Out of the corner of one green eye, Bubbles noticed a golden paw attempt to reach for the candles, he assumed to remove them, and the Spiral only screeched in panic.

“NODRAKE MOVE!” he screamed, flaring his spotted wings and arms. When the other paw started to lower, the Spiral relaxed slightly.

An hour, followed by another, went by sluggishly. Many and eventually all dragons gave up and left the room in search of an easier meal. Only Bubbles remained, still staring into the mocking flames.

The wax of the candles had well melted and mixed into the top layer of icing, but there was not much string left, either. Soon it should burn itself out.

He blinked—

—and his heart jolted at the sight of a small red face looming over the now-smoking candles, her green eyes triumphant but piercing, and her frills were flattened.

“Bryony!” Bubbles shrieked, partly in fear, and partly in admiration. But mostly fear. The red and gold Fae was so brave, but she hadn’t realized the dangers she could’ve caused!

“You’re welcome, scaredy-drake,” she said. “Nothing terrible happened. Just like every other time.”

Bubbles didn’t get a chance to answer as his vision began to darken and he felt himself fall over backwards. He didn’t recall the feeling of hitting the floor, unconscious.

“All you have to do is tell her how you really feel,” Rocky chimed in.

“Yeah, how bad can it possibly be?” April said, nudging the Spiral before her with her elbow.

“Right,” Red murmured.

Bubbles trembled, still staring after where he’d seen Bryony fly around the next corner. Why did he ask these dragons for advice? He should’ve kept his big mouth shut.

But what if something happened and the red and gold Fae would never know how he truly felt about her? And she was everything he was not, how could he ever find the courage to just…

Fly over to her, spin into view to get her attention, look her straight in the eyes, and tell her—

“Oh, hey Bubbles,” Bryony greeted him casually.

—TELL HER WHAT HE DIDN’T ACTUALLY DO IT DID HE OH GOOD GODS WHY WAS HE STILL STARING AT HER LIKE—

“Are you okay?” she asked him, looking at the Spiral’s horrified expression strangely. Bryony blinked.

She flared her frills and wings in surprise when there was now nodrake to be seen. The Fae had felt the slightest gust of air breeze by and she swiftly craned her neck to look behind her. Bryony briefly saw the tip of a dark tail vanish around the corner, leaving her perplexed until she shrugged, turning back around.

He’d been sent to check on the cooks, and for once, Bubbles was looking forward to it.

Jammy and her son Velvet always made such wonderful treats. The talent the Spirals had with food was incredible, they even rivaled Sweetstep’s, much to the elderly Skydancer’s dismay. Bubbles’ stomach growled in anticipation as he flapped his spotted wings faster, zooming down the hall.

When he finally reached the kitchen door, he stopped right in front and knocked on the wooden surface thrice, waiting for a response.

But none came.

Bubbles cocked a single scaled brow in confusion. Jammy or Velvet should be here, shouldn’t they? They usually always were, and they always responded to a knock or a voice. All the Spirals ever did was bake and cook, rarely leaving or not speaking unless—

Oh no.

Bubbles’ heart started to race wildly as terrible thoughts wormed their way into his head.

What if something horrible happened? Could they be unable to say anything because they both slipped while chopping something? What if the pots and pans she had hanging up had fallen all at once and crushed them OH BY THE ELEVEN WHAT SHOULD HE DO WHAT SHOULD HE DO?!

He swallowed hard, widening his pale green eyes and lifting a shaking paw to turn the knob. The door creaked and groaned as it was being pushed open, and he thought his heart stopped at the sight before him.

There was Jammy, all right. Slowly turning to face him, her crimson eyes latched onto his. A crazed smile began creeping across her white face, and something red and sticky was dripping from her mouth and claws.

“Bubbles,” she said, “you’re next—”

"YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" Bubbles screamed as he disappeared down the hall.

“—to try my...berry pies...” Jammy finished quietly, her smile starting to vanish. She shook her head and rolled her eyes, turning back to her pastries.

"Was that Bubbles?" Velvet asked, popping around a corner, his face also dripping with juices. "I would've answered but these pies are TOO delicious to share and not keep eating." And he stuffed the last slice of his pie into his jaws.

He still couldn’t believe he was still flying this way.

The only thing that kept him going towards the dark forest across from the island was Bogatyr’s threat ringing throughout his mind.

“If you’d rather stay and help Al with his work...”

No. No no no. Bubbles trusted Alyss of course, since the other Spiral was the clan’s only doctor, and a skilled one at that, but Bubbles always got queasy at the thought of changing another dragon’s bandages. He flapped on.

When he reached the shores, all he could do was stare into the inkyness. Gulping hard, he forced his body forward, tiptoeing into the darkness, using his large eyes and the glowing mushrooms to find his way around as he recalled Bogatyr’s words before he left.

The orange Nocturne had been talking to Urdin about telling—and not telling—Dewlap that they were sending Bubbles on his mission. Urdin had sounded uncertain about keeping it secret from Dewlap, but Bogatyr tried reassuring the big blue Guardian that Dewlap already had enough to worry about taking care of his three children with Trove.

As Bubbles walked on, he also wondered what Bogatyr had meant. Was Dewlap afraid of this forest? He was a wizard, he shouldn’t be afraid of anything. Did something terrible happen here that nodrake told Bubbles about? And why did Urdin sound so anxious he thought Dewlap should know that Bubbles was being sent here? He rarely spoke to Dewlap himself, but he couldn’t fathom why they’d think the old Nocturne should worry about this forest or the young Spiral. He began trembling more the further he ventured into the dark forest.

He didn't know how long he's been traveling. Suddenly he stopped and stared.

This must be it.

The trunk was charred and split open. Branches littered the floor here and there, and Bubbles noticed a hole in the front. He could barely see inside from out here, but he definitely saw something glowing.

He dared closer. The hole was about the size of a small Guardian, and he easily slipped inside without brushing the rough sides. His heart lurched when one foot felt nothing underneath, but his wings snapped open and he cautiously drifted down, tucking his wings to his sides when he landed.

Bubbles briefly noticed a hole blasted in one wall, and a table split in half rested in the centre of the room. Just below it were shattered porcelain jars on the ground.

His attention found the glow. When he looked over, he saw that it appeared to be some sort of scroll that was partially rolled up on a smaller table. Faint yellow markings glimmered on one side of its dark surface. Bubbles inched closer to see what they said, but he couldn’t make it out underneath all of the ash.

The Spiral drew in a shaking breath before releasing a slow exhale across the parchment.

His heart fluttered in fear. Did he just see it twitch?

He did. Because it was still twitching.

Bubbles remained frozen in place as he watched. He heard the terrible crackling sounds it made as it slithered to life and spun into the air and danced horribly over his head.

Was that a tendril of darkness snaking from its centre?

Was that a beaked skull forming at the end?

WAS IT STARING AT HIM WITH SWIRLING EYES?

shadow serpent

“Sssssp—”

“YAAAAAAAAAAH!”

Screaming, Bubbles bolted back out. He flapped his wings hard and willed them to flap faster.

Just don’t look back don’t look back don’t look back don’t look back—

He couldn’t help it.

But it was still chasing after him.

Oh great.

It felt like an eternity until he finally reached the shore again, and the light greeted him as he suddenly sank down to the sand, curling his entire body into a tight ball.

When he ducked, he felt a strong breeze whoosh past and over him. He didn’t dare look up for several moments.

He swiftly and carefully sprang to his feet and cast uneasy glances all around them.

What was that thing? What had it been about to say? And where was it now?

Bubbles shuddered violently. He didn’t want to know, did he?

Snapping his spotted wings open once more, he flew back towards the castle across the great Sea.

...

By the time he returned, his body shook uncontrollably all over.

Dragons now surrounded him as they asked questions.

“What took you?”

“Thought that was the fastest he flew back, honestly.”

“Did you see anything?”

“I—it—ha—wha—” Bubbles wheezed.

“Maybe Vester can cheer you up,” somedrake else said, though he couldn't tell who.

Vester? Who was—

Bubbles’ pale green gaze followed where every other dragon looked, and Bubbles froze solid.

This dragon’s face...it seemed to be painted white with odd red marks and a bright red nose and he was dressed in richly coloured clothing.

A clown.

Bubbles fainted.
