Crack!

The morning sunlight felt hot on her back. It was likely just barely above freezing outside but that was still warmer than she was used to living at the Fortress. The lone tree that she slept under was dripping water down onto her wings. Definitely above freezing then.
Stretching out her wings and legs reminded her of just how sore she was. She stood up and glanced over to the cause- the stolen sled she had dragged across the snowy expanse with her.
-
Only a few days ago she was still on her patrol in the Fortress. But it wasn’t any regular old day, no, because some dragon had almost escaped the Fortress the day prior. There had been attempted jailbreaks before, but they were often woefully underprepared for the work of removing a dragon from the ice wall. But this time? They had nearly escaped. The culprits were captured, of course. They always were, but Irinte couldn’t help but wonder why they would even try. If they were aware of the danger and how to do it, they should’ve known it was impossible. But, these questions would remain unanswered, it’s not like Irinte had the authority to question the culprits.
So, there Irinte was, guarding the block of ice that was completely removed from the ice wall. Turns out it was placed on a sled and covered in cloth. Ready to leave. She was alone, so she investigated further.
Looking under the cover, she saw the ice block, clear and mostly free of cracks, housing a small frozen dragon. The dragon appeared to be a Fae, gray in color with circuit patterning, just like Irinte. Did she know her? Hmmm- Probably not. Fae were pretty rare dragons to see in the Fortress, it was too cold for them usually, unless they happened to be Ice dragons themselves.
Why did they try so hard to free this one, tiny, Fae? There had to be a reason. So, against everything she was taught, Irinte ran. Sled in tow.
-
Halfway through her journey she wondered, what if the dragon she had just rescued was actually evil? They were captured in the ice so they must have done something evil, right?
If it came down to it, Irinte supposed she could overpower the small dragon if she had to. She hoped that she was doing the right thing.
She held onto that hope for the rest of the journey until she passed out for the short night.
-
Irinte removed the cover from the sled, revealing the slightly melted block of ice. She double checked the bags on the sled, full of medicine just as she left it. Then she grabbed the ice pick tied to the sled.
Now that she was far enough away that the ice had begun to melt, and she could be sure that she likely wasn’t being followed…
It was time to meet the dragon she had rescued.
