ABOUT
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
Once a year, the eleven elements set aside their differences to celebrate Sorineth's creation and the beginning of a new year. For the mirrors of the world, it is a time of revelry- ravenous feasting, dancing and hedonism. It is a chance to swarm. In the aftermath of these careless celebrations, it's not uncommon for mirror eggs to be left in the ruin and churned earth of mirror encampments to fend for themselves once they hatch. From one of these eggs, kicked and rolled into the roots of a tree during the festivities, hatched a lean, shadowy creature who refused to let death take her like it did so many orphans. This was Skadi.

For days, the young mirror wandered the border between the Tangled Wood and the Sunbeam Ruins. She learned to hunt and how to hide from what she couldn't hurt, and she learned quickly, for she was unnaturally bright. Skadi's mind is like a finely honed blade: an analytic tool which she wields calmly and confidently. She was content to live alone with only her deep, keen thoughts for company- until she stumbled into a fellow orphan around her age. The young tundra blazed as warm as the sun, offering to share a nest of bird's eggs he'd found while foraging before even learning her name. His kindness awoke something, a longing for family and community she'd never felt before. Together, the pair thrived, and other dragons were drawn to them, for they balanced each other beautifully and naturally fell into leadership of a new clan.

The larger the clan, the more room there is for corruption to take hold. Skadi discovered too late that Sif, her second-in-command, was plotting a coup. The bogsneak leveraged a young Skydancer Surtr and Skadi had adopted against them, pressuring the pair into exaltation so Sif could run the clan as she saw fit. Skadi refused to let this loss break her spirit, and used the opportunity to hone her fighting skills. She served the Wind-god along the southernmost borders of his territory, where she heard legends of the Southern Icefield's gaolers. Skadi was inspired by the tales of the Icewarden's watchdogs, imposing beasts who kept Sorineth's worst darknesses contained. She studied their ice magic whenever she got the chance, honing herself to a frigid, razor-sharp point.

But for all her training, Skadi never imagined she would need to use it against a Shade-tainted creature so soon. On a routine patrol near beastclan territory, Skadi's unit was ambushed by a Frost Delver that had been possessed by a trace of the Shade and run wild, managing to bore out of its prison, under the sea, and emerged right underneath Skadi. It devastated her team, slaughtering and living creature in range indiscriminately. By the gods' grace, Skadi managed to mangle it badly enough to contain it by herself, but the corrupted machine self-destructed. Skadi's world went black, and when she finally came to, it was in a familiar den, with a familiar face by her side.

Skadi's life had nearly been lost in the battle, and she was granted leave from exaltation for her trauma to recover and resume control of the Galehart clan she founded with Surtr. She was alive, but it was a different life than she'd led before. The world was darker, harder, colder- a shadow of its former self. She could scarcely tolerate sunlight, and was unable to shake a sharp ache in her chest, which the clan's healers attributed to splinters of Shade-touched shrapnel they had been unable to remove after the explosion. Preventing its spread requires consistent management, using medicinal hexes to kill the Shade and keep it contained without killing its host. Skadi prefers this half-life to death, but it has changed her to her core. She is quieter, more distant. They are still soulmates who can scarcely stand to be apart, but Skadi no longer sleeps curled up in Surtr's coils. When night falls, she rises to stalk the clan's borders, hunting for ill-willed intruders. Her patrols put her in a trance: nothing but her body becoming one with the night in singular pursuit of that which scarred her. The faint glow from her markings can be seen weaving through the trees, eyes flashing in the moonlight, and her advice to any who cross her in this state is this: don't try to lie to her if you value your life.
