ABOUT

▾ Opal and her sibling Chainsaw were hatched from a celebratory nest on the Galehart's anniversary by the clan's progens. Immediately, Opal took after her father, a luminous healer with a gentle, compassionate demeanor. She had hatched completely deaf, but before she was old enough to learn other communication methods, her coatl father taught her his native language. The rhythmic humming tones of coatl tongue rest below hearing range for most dragons, but can be felt and understood in close proximity by non-coatls who are fluent. Though she could use this language to communicate with her parents and coatl clanmates, she wanted a way to connect with the rest of her clan, and taught herself sign language and lip-reading as she grew older.
▾ Opal wasn't the only sibling who had to work harder to get a good start in life. Chainsaw, who had been hatched a mirror with small wing incapable of flight, had intense body dysphoria and struggled with their mental health growing up. They were mostly non-verbal, and isolated themselves from the rest of the clan, and on multiple occasions, injured themselves jumping from high ledges to try and force their wings to work. Their parents told Chainsaw they would help them perform a breed change once they were an adult, but they were impatient. One night, Chainsaw snuck out to the marketplace and used treasure 'borrowed' from the clan vault to buy a bootlegged skydancer scroll. When they tried to perform the breed change on themselves, something went wrong, and they ended up spliced between the two breeds. ▾ Opal has always been deeply empathic, and it broke her heart to see her sibling suffering so much. After the accident, they became aggressive and lost touch with reality, lashing out at anyone who got close. But Opal was determined to help them if she could. With Surtr's help, she learned the ways of magical healing, but even their combined efforts couldn't reach Chainsaw. Desperate, Opal spent countless hours in the clan library, researching everything she could get her hands on about dragons who struggled with psychosis and dissociation similar to Chainsaw's. Every morning, she would bring them food and sit as close to them as she safely could, talking to them to try and ground them and remind them they weren't alone in their struggles. Over time, Chainsaw became more responsive to Opal's efforts, opening up to their clanmates by tentative degrees. They still make their own way for the most part, but her stubbornness and hard work was able to help them regain a sense of self and break through their self-destructive tendencies. ▾ Impressed by Opal's ability to heal and soothe such a tortured and standoffish clanmate, other Galeharts began seeking her out for help with their own mental health issues. And so, she decided to open up a formal practice and become the clan's first therapist. It was difficult at first, only being able to communicate with her patients through coatl-speak, lip-reading, and in a few rare cases, sign language. Most of the time, Opal has to work with a hearing interpreter during her sessions, and had a rotating agreement with the hearing signers in the clan during her practice's early days. ▾ All that changed when Opal met Nacht. Nacht was the granddaughter of two Galeharts, and had been raised in the Shifting Expanse until her clan was destroyed. Nacht initally sought out Opal for help recovering from her trauma, but over the course of their sessions, the two became close friends. Close enough, even, that Opal had to call off their therapy sessions because she favored Nacht so much. Opal is a shy dragon, and never had many friends growing up. Nacht was the first dragon she felt she could really be herself around, despite the communication barrier. ▾ During the attack on her clan, Nacht sustained partial hearing loss in one ear. After talking about it at length with Opal, she decided to learn sign language. As a fae, the gestural language came naturally to her, and the more confident a signer Nacht became, the happier Opal was to finally have someone she could truly talk to. When she felt fluent in her signing abilities, Nacht offered to interpret for Opal with her other patients, and the two have worked closely ever since.
