Storge lived his life initially believing he didn't need anyone else. Why would he? Growing up in the Southern Icefield, he'd become accustomed to frigidity, both emotionally and environmentally. His clan made shelter in a palatial nest within the Snowsquall Tundra, adorned with fine silks, soft furs, and scintillating jewels imported from the Viridian Labyrinth. Storge had no problem flaunting his fineries, reminding lesser clans of his social status. However, he more often enjoyed getting lost with his friends in the Cloudscrape Crags - hunting small wildlife, diving off the mountain range, and discussing significant aspects of life. Even when the frozen waste plummeted them into blizzard after numbing blizzard, Storge knew they would be by his side until the end, and over time, he wanted for nothing else. This was before the Icewarden, forever preoccupied in unpredictable thoughts, plunged the Icefield into a glacial prison for a long decade. Every clan suffered, their pride and arrogance worn away by ribbed stomachs and blue-stained tears. Storge had never seen a frozen body before, and a strange part of him found a kind of beauty in the otherwise crystalline horror. He focused on his friends' glazed eyes, the way the dragons' genes seemed to shimmer beneath the ice - a constellation of distorted snowflakes and talon-shaped icicles. It was the only way he could accept what had happened to his home. At the first sign of sunlight, the Skydancer travelled north to the Starfall Isles as fast as he could, needing to leave the atrocity behind, needing to forget his clans' frozen faces. What he hadn't planned on during his voyage, however, was meeting Agape. Even embittered by the harsh winter, Agape looked regal. Her Nature eyes glowed in the emerging sun, her matching colors shone in ethereal tones, and her lithe, twisting body truly embodied Skydancer elegance. Storge practically weeped at the sight of her. 'How did you escape?' was the first thing she asked, 'the winters?' Before he could answer, she rushed on. 'They took everything, you know. Not just our food, but our spirits. Our hope. The Icewarden…' 'He is unforgiving,' Storge finished. Agape glanced up, eyes brimming with tears. She nodded. That night, they lay side by side under the stars - a sight neither had seen in a long time. Storge regarded the Skydancer next to him with reserved curiosity. He asked what she did before winter hit. Studied philosophy. She asked what he valued most in life. The freedom to create and discover. He asked her what she'd have done if the winters hadn't hit. Something quiet, something mysterious, something at night. Astrology, maybe. 'You don't have to stay if you don’t want to,' Agape said hours into the night. 'What do you want?' Storge said. His chest tightened at her answer. Her voice cracked. 'I want you to stay with me,' she whispered. Storge pulled her closer, wrapping his wings around hers, entangling her within his tender embrace. Months passed in the Starfall Isles. Scholars who study the nature of soulmates whisper that their love was not only eternal, but unconditional. Their hearts beat in rhythm. Each night, Storge nuzzled Agape, her silky hide a pleasant departure from the scaly skin of other dragons. Their tails curled together, tickling. It took time for him to love her, but once he had, once he realized the honesty of it, there was nothing that could break him. |
