Agape loved everything and every dragon in the Everbloom Gardens. She discovered quite young that this was not a very ideal way to live, for she was met with an exhaustible amount of rejection and unrequited love. Despite her rather unconventional mishaps with other dragons, she never lost her elegance. Fine robes adorned with imported gems, plush cushions and drapes for nesting, and velvet-covered sheaths that held glittering ornate swords lined her corner of the clan. No other dragon in the Nature Realm possessed these items, and Agape made sure to let everyone know. Things changed when winter arrived. It was by far the bitterest years Agape had ever lived through. Her forest withered around her; sharp branches scraped the skies and the ground as every ounce of green perished beneath the cold's numbing grip. Her clan prayed to the Icewarden, but his answer was merciless. One by one, her clanmates froze, leaving the Skydancer even more aloof than she'd been before. And for a dragon who loved as fiercely as she lived, there was something dangerous brewing within a heart encased by ice. It wasn't the death of her clan that haunted Agape, though. As she travelled west, seeking refuge in the Tangled Wood, the possibility of never doing the things she loved again, never having a life again, is what scared her the most. Every day from now she would not only be alone, but also struggling to survive in unknown territory, fighting against elements she'd never encountered before. When she met Storge, fear spread throughout her body. An Ice dragon. She considered him. A Skydancer like herself, though far too skinny. His brilliant feathers were bloodied and falling out, exposing patches of rough, scaly skin. The winters had been unkind to him as well. Nonetheless, he held himself upright, confident in a cocky sort of way. Assertive yet thoughtful. 'How did you escape the winters?' she asked. Before he could answer, a hot fury surged through her. 'They took everything, you know. Not just our food, but our spirits. Our hope. The Icewarden…' The Skydancer suddenly looked tired. His pale, weary eyes drooped. 'He is unforgiving.' That was enough. So much pain and heartache rested within those three words, and Agape nodded. They travelled together the rest of the way. First through the Tangled Wood, where Storge held her tight as shadows invaded their dreams, and then through the Scarred Wasteland, where together they evaded festering boils and bubbling diseases. It was easy for her to love him. He was someone warm, someone thoughtful, a dragon of both finery and compassion. She fell for him gently, slowly. She liked the way he talked about the meaning and meaninglessness of life. She liked how he lost himself mid-flight, closing his eyes as he soared as gracefully as a Spiral. She liked his quietness. She liked the way his feathers glittered in the moonlight, and she liked that she was the only one who got to see it. She liked how, by the time they reached the Starfall Isles, her love for him was unconditional. |
