Biography

Caring Nanny -
Madina

My blindness will not stand in my way,
not now, not ever!

You know how they say hatchlings cannot pick parents, so when they hatch they're either in a caring family or broken one? It's like a flip of the coin, it almost always falls onto one of the sides, heads or tails, and almosts never ends up sideways. Madina's fate coin fell onto the good side. Her father, the proud Imperial, and mother, strong, self-confident Guardian, gave her best possible education, many opportunities to pick the hobbies she likes, as well as absolute trust and lots of love but she never knew she was missing something. Because she is one of the Trench Dwellers, she was born blind, but her other senses are far sharper than those of other dragons. She didn't find this to be a problem, alas, she didn't even know that something like sight exists, as she was born into the family full of dragons same as her.

But as every other idyl, it never lasts forever. The long winter in The Southern Icefield finally made its move and froze the ocean surface, making it much harder to access the ocean and hunt for food. The inevitable happened, and the family had to lower the number of mouths to feed. Madina was one of the chosen ones to leave and look for a new home, a new place to call her own. She tried to act like a responsible adult, understanding that it had to be done, and she kept the facade on until the last meal with her family has come. While eating the last of prey caught by her father, giant tears rolled over her face, dripping onto the food she was eating. The following morning, the goodbyes were long, but after she started flying, she didn't look back. She couldn't.

Everything that she ever had was given to her on a silver platter and now she was stripped of all of it, other than her knowledge and skill, which she never had to use for hunting on dry land. As such, she decided to cross the ocean, to find land over the giant lake! Northen lands are said to be warmer and with more food, but with many new dangers in the ocean as well. She grew tired of flying very quickly and, as soon as she saw an opening in the ice, she decided to swim instead. She should've done so from the beginning.
The food was scarce and spots to breathe air were uncommon, but she managed. As she swam to the North, she barely ate, putting all her effort to reach warmer waters, filled with more prey.

After a long swim, she reached her destination. Warmer water finally touched her scales, and there was a swarm of fishes in the distance. She could almost taste them already, not having eaten for days.

AHXUQvp.gif With a full belly and regained strength, she set her foot on the land again. See seems to have ended up in The Windswept Plateau, at least that's what she assumed due to all the bamboo around her.

The first step was to find somewhere to stay, but for that, she needed treasure to pay the rent. But she had no treasure on hand, nor anything valuable to trade. Maybe she could trade some of the fish... Wind Flight doesn't really fish, but rather catch the birds and such, so maybe they'd be interested in some of the sea cuisine.
As she hoped, the eccentric Wind dragons bought some fish to try out new food, but as she walked along the coast and around the village she found, she realized that she was different from them. They called themselves artists, painters and such, and they were speaking of colors and abstract shapes. She couldn't understand what a color was, nor could she see their abstract paintings. She didn't understand the beauty of the colorful flower fields or cloud shapes in the sky.
She soon understood that she wouldn't be able to fit this kind of society, demanding the visual ability she lacked. With the newfound realization that there is something others have, but she doesn't, she set off on a new journey, looking for a place that would be more forgiving to her blindness. It's not that she couldn't settle in Wind, it's just that she didn't feel as if it was her "home".

This time swimming from the start, she decided to try in the Starfall Isles. They shared the border with The Southern Icefield, so she might feel better there. At the border, she finally settled in a small near the sea, where she sold some of her caught fish for a bit of treasure. With that treasure, she rented a small, one-room cave. It wasn't much, nothing compared to the place she lived with her family, but it was a roof over her head! Not that rain bothered her, or anything. Well, she could keep this lifestyle by catching fish, but she wanted more, she wanted better, she knew she could do better. Even while being blind, she could do more! But looking at the job offers was a bit of a problem for a blind dragon. They were, after all, written in paper and left on the boards.
She just stood in front of the board, to which another dragon showed her the way to after she asked them if there were any jobs available. But they had to leave before she could ask them to read some for her, so she was just there, standing...
Well, her luck didn't run out, as an elderly dragon asked if there were any job that interested her since she just stared blankly at the board for so long. As soon as he gave her a better look, he realized that she was blind and offered to read ads for her. There were quite a few jobs offers for a small town as this one was, but none of them fit Madina. She couldn't be a gardener, she couldn't teach magic or runes, she couldn't write paper books or map the night sky. Disappointed and disheartened, she started to walk towards her cave as elderly dragon called out to her.
The elderly dragon had a nursery, but he was already old and too weak to handle all the hatchlings. He was about to look how ads look like so he could make his own. Knowing that a young lady such as Madina could probably handle few rowdy hatchlings, even if she were blind, with no problem, he offered her a job at the nursery. She'd have to take care of a small group of hatchlings from when they hatch to their young teenage days, teach them manners and order as well as play some fun games with them. She didn't have to be worried about teaching them to read or paint, he'll employ another babysitter. Babysitters always work better in pairs, he stated, because not all hatchlings would have bonded with a single dragon, but with at least two, every hatchling can find a role model they like and they strive to be.

Her first day was interesting. She was working with a Spiral dragon, Boreas, on the group of six hatchlings. She managed to do better than she expected. Hatchlings were like the fish she was caught in the ocean, easy to lead to do as one wished. She could get them to listen by starting a story about the deep waters, or cold icy plains of her homeland, or she could get them to use clay to make sculptures. She even brought some of her fish to let show them how to prepare raw fish. And the little ones found her interesting! They probably didn't even know that she was blind, as she always knew where they were and roughly what they're doing as well. The other dragon, Boreas, taught them runes and how to read, and he was diligent in his work, but he was quite lazy when housework had to be done. Madina didn't really mind doing all the chores since they never took long because they were done daily.

She was working there for months, raising generations of hatchlings, leading them to adulthood. But one day, the owner of the nursery, the elderly dragon, scumbled to sickness and old age. His family didn't plan on keeping the nursery running due to low income and so, the nursery closed, leaving Madina jobless once again. She was sad to head the elder was gone, but she was grateful to him. He believed in her and gave her the chance to start in the foreign land. With the treasure she saved up, she was thinking of moving again, to look for another nursery job. She grew quite fond of raising the hatchlings...
As she was strolling the town, thinking if she should move, or just continue here, catching fish for a living, she heard familiar footsteps. Boreas was walking the street. No, walking might be too much. He barely moved, putting one leg in front of other seemed to take him over five seconds.

It was raining too, so it was even stranger. Most dragons didn't enjoy being soaking wet, and due to previous experience, she knew Boreas was one of them. She decided to offer him a place to stay, at least until the rain calms down. As they were walking towards her cave, Boreas broke down, telling her everything that crushed him. He was left by his mate, he lost his place to stay and his job, all in a single day. After knowing that, Madina couldn't just let him leave, so she decided to let him stay for a while longer until he regained some of his confidence and can stand on his own again. She earned the treasure by catching fish to pay the rent, and she provided the food and he actually did housework and went to look for a job now and then. They shared their life stories, their dreams, and fears while sharing a cave, and Madina couldn't help but fall for the charming Spiral.

One evening Boreas brought the ad for the nursery job. He seemed super excited about it, so she naturally got more curious. After he read her the ad, they couldn't skip the opportunity. Meeting their possible employers was a bit stressful for both of them, as it was the first time for Madina to actually be interviewed and Boreas was nervous as he didn't want to lose this job. After being asked some questions, they were told they'll contact them again. Madina felt somewhat excited because it seemed that they liked her, but she could feel Boreases disappointment. He was afraid that he would be employed and that he'd have to part with Madina, as she'd have to move to Plague. Madina was contacted later and was told she was accepted for the job, but Boreas was not. She was about to refuse the offer, but the female employer broke the short moment of silence before Madina, saying that this was what they originaly decided, but that she could understand that Boreas and Madina operate as a couple, so they decided to employ both of them.

As of now, both of them are live-in babysitters in Forsaken Cave, happily raising hatchlings of other clan members, as well as their own. Madina was not being discriminated against, rather, she was teaching some dragons how to use their other senses better! Well, she loves it in the Forsaken Cave, but that Plagued catfish, she could've loved without tasting that... You can always visit the Forsaken Cave Nursery!
