Though conceived and hatched far from the deep oceans of her ancestors, Kirie looks every bit of of her Trench Dweller heritage. Like her mother, she is blind. Unlike her mother, she was hatched among sighted dragons, and felt deeply the difference between herself and her fellow hatchlings. The firm and loving care of her parents ensured that she was not picked on, but she was nevertheless shy and withdrawn, preferring to stick close to her mother's side rather than play boldly with her peers.

As the hatchlings grew stronger, they were encouraged to leave the nursery with their carers to explore the outside world. Kirie particularly adored swimming with her mother when their trips took them to the coast or to the underground watercourses of the Forsaken Cave. She was by no means helpless on dry land. Her sharp hearing and sense of smell allowed her to pick out a rich, if somewhat fuzzy view of the world. But immersed in water, her finely tuned senses for current and pressure allowed a far sharper image. Though her shyness had kept her from building much strength and stamina on land, when she started to swim she found herself, very literally, in her element. The hatchling began to embark on longer and longer swims, building muscle and confidence at a startling pace.

And then, one day, she swam too far from her mother. Out in the Sea of a Thousand Currents, the lure of fresh water laden with unfamiliar scents drew her to strike out northwards. Her mother, busy supervising less confident swimmers, didn't notice Kirie's absence until the currents had swept her scent trail into disarray, making her difficult to track.

By the time Kirie reached the shore, the youngster was exhausted. The gentle current of the stream whose scent she had followed made a welcome change from the rough tides of the ocean. She wanted nothing more than to crawl ashore and find a place to sleep, but the coastline was thick with vegetation. Unfamiliar sounds and smells permeated the strange forest, and she was afraid to venture out of the water. Hoping to find safer territory further inland, she followed the river, but soon found herself swimming under mats of vegetation and clambering through driftwood dams.

When she thought she could almost go no longer, the hatchling's keen nose picked out a familiar scent - young dragons like herself, and lots of them. Though she knew she was deep in foreign lands, she remembered the chaotic, unruly atmosphere of the nursery. With as many hatchlings as she could smell in one place, perhaps no one would notice another if she just crept in and slept. So she followed her nose down a long burrow in the dank earth until she could feel an open space around her and hear the motions of many other youngsters. Most seemed to be sleeping, so she flopped down and did the same.

Not only did nobody seem to notice her sudden arrival, no one reacted to the presence of an unfamiliar hatchling at all. If she had thought the Forsaken Cave's nursery was chaotic, the lair she found herself in was beyond the pale. The other youngsters seemed accustomed to hatchlings coming and going. Adult supervision was rare and lacklustre, and certainly none of them seemed to know how many youngsters there should be. The hatchlings slept together in the nursery burrow by day, and by night they ran amok through the clan's territory. At the urging of some of the more friendly locals, Kirie followed them, and was amazed to find that the youngsters simply helped themselves to the clan's food stores. A demure coatl watched them carefully and made sure they took only reasonable amounts, but there was no attempt to police what kind of food they chose to eat. Kirie gorged herself on tender meats, and felt much better for having eaten.

But she was still far from home, separated from her clan by the wide ocean, surrounded by the unknown terrors of the thorny wood. She hadn't any idea how to find her way home. Here, at least, was food and shelter and safety. Perhaps she would stay a few more days and build up her strength.

But days turned into weeks, weeks into months until Kirie felt she had lived as long in the chaotic tunnels as she had in her parents' care. She was only young, and memories of home intruded less and less frequently into her thoughts as she bonded with her new peers and learned to navigate the forest with confidence. She found it a harsh life, but an active and exciting one. Some madness seemed to be upon the dragons of this clan, such as it was. They fought constantly among themselves, seemed to have no clear leadership or organisation, barely had any loyalty to one another. Resources were scarce, and kindness scarcer. The adults called her Foundling, and Blindeyes, and many more names besides. But Kirie remembered her own name, and kept it close to her heart.
