Katsura

Gabriel was a well-liked, noble and confident dragon within his clan; often choosing to help out wherever he could. With his approachable nature and jovial attitude, he was often asked favours by his other clanmates, which he would follow through willingly.

This all changed the day he found an injured Windcarve Harpy being attacked by a flock of Stonewatch Harpies. Despite his fellow gatherers advising him to step back, his noble instincts refused to let him leave even a beastclan member in distress. Unfortunately, his efforts were in vain. Despite fighting off the flock, the injured harpy passed away… leaving behind a small bundle of feathers – a male harpy.

Upon taking the creature back to his clan, Gabriel found himself turned upon. His clan members all agreed that the danger from harpy attacks would become too great. Clearly they wanted the little creature back – enough to go against a large imperial. Gabriel was given the choice – stay with the clan and abandon the hatchling to the harpies, or leave with the youngster. Unable to give the little creature up to an uncertain fate, Gabriel left the clan he had known for most of his life.

No longer feeling honourable, Gabriel cast aside his name, instead taking pleasure in naming his new companion, Finn. The duo wandered far and wide, staying away from both beast and dragonclans for fear of discovery. It was only upon reaching the mostly deserted, somewhat dangerous, outreaches of the Starfall Isles that they finally felt safe and settled to make themselves at home.

The two lived happily for a long while, with Finn growing into a strong, fine adult harpy. They befriended the maren outcasts that shared their home, but Finn became restless, thinking about the twin brother he had been forced to abandon when they had escaped from his former clan. Eventually, without telling his companion, whom he had now christened ‘Katsura’, Finn slipped away determined to use his surprisingly ferocious fighting skills to get his brother back.

Upon discovering that Finn was missing, Katsura was distraught. All alone on the Starfal Isles, he contemplated escaping, but he couldn’t think of any purpose in his life. With instincts often more noted in guardian dragons, he felt a strong desire to keep Finn from all harm. The anxious wait, not knowing where his friend was, left him bitter and afraid. Every hour he would scan the skies, looking for any hint of green.

It was during one of these scans that he finally saw a tremendous flock of harpies. Following this lead, he was able to assist a strange mirror, who carried another male harpy upon his back. Despite the brown feathers and skin, the similarities to Finn were striking… but he was not the right harpy. The female harpies attempted retreat, but Katsura followed, instinct driving him. It was there that he finally found Finn, trapped in a net carried by the harpies and unable to fight back. Katsura fought for his freedom, driving away the harpy flock once more.

Upon returning to the strange mirror, Katsura soon found that the two of them were similar. The mirror was alone and even nameless in the world, but he still protected the strange brown harpy – Finn’s twin brother, Leif. It was this that warmed Katsura to the mirror. He bestowed upon him the name ‘Ravyn’ and swore to protect him from any danger – both external… and internal.

The group lived happily for a while, before they again found themselves under attack by a strange yellow dragon. Katsura was able to chase the intruder off, but remained cautious. The tiny dragon was soon followed by two imperials. Both were smaller than Katsura, but he could feel their strength. Unlike the little fae before them, they wouldn’t be chased away. Instead, they insisted upon talking.

Before Katsura knew it, he found himself with an invitation to join Clan Kaitos – along with Ravyn, Finn and Leif. A non-judgemental clan that protected the beastclans who allied themselves, but came down hard upon their foe seemed the perfect place for their group. Once the little yellow fae had been found, and had apologised for her actions, the group returned to the Shifting Expanse… and to their new home.

Katsura settled in quickly with Finn, although Ravyn and Leif remained more cautious. Katsura often joined Kain and Bramble – two of the dragons that had met him on the Starfall Isles – on hunting trips outside the clan.

It was during one of these trips that Katsura discovered a solitary wildclaw. She was huddled under a tree in the rainforest, trying to protect herself from a sudden downpour. Katsura soon found that, like Ravyn before her, she was alone and nameless. With the permission of Bramble, he invited her back to the clan and gave her her new name – Lailah.

Surprisingly, Lailah and Ravyn got along very well and the group settled down once more. Katsura remained the most outspoken, but attempts to coax the other two dragons into becoming more open failed. He instead vowed to protect them at all costs, and not let their internal demons overcome them. Katsura also continued to try and be useful around the clan, becoming a well-liked member, along with the similarly confident and helpful Finn. Soon, other members of the clan were asking them to join on foraging missions. Finn would often go along, acting as lookout and generally making himself useful.

It was during one of these foraging missions with Shaushka, the beloved imperial princess of two clans, that they found themselves under attack. A trio of imperials unwisely threatened the tiny harpy’s life and quickly realised their error. With two large, angry, and very strong imperials against them, the trio soon found both their leader and their strongest member trapped, with the third too afraid to move.

After making sure Finn was unharmed, the two imperials of Clan Kaitos sat down with the trio. They finally noticed that the gang, despite their age, were down on their luck, having been cast out of their clan for ‘unpure’ bloodlines. With only one of them having any fighting ability, and their leader not even having a name, the trio had had to resort to unsavoury means to survive. Ever one for taking in unfortunates, Katsura quickly took them under his wing, and Shaushka worked to convince Kain to let them join the clan.

Surprisingly, the trio quickly fitted in, and became clan favourites in no time. Ravyn and Lailah became firm friends with them, and even Finn forgave them for attacking him. Katsura renamed them all, with their permission, and even gave the leader his first ever name – Li. Killian and Caspian happily accepted their new names and their new start in life.

To this day, Katsura remains the protector of all he holds dear. While this does include the whole of Clan Kaitos, he pays particular attention to those he considers his family – Finn, Leif, Ravyn, Lailah, Li, Killian and Caspian. He will do anything for these, but he knows they will not take advantage of this. He has finally found his place in the world, and he is happy.
