PATRIARCHGALLANTCHIVALROUS

You stumble upon the clan by accident. You were on a leisurely tour of the Windswept Plateau when you heard a distant clink clink clink, and spurred by curiosity, you found yourself winding through the bamboo thickets in search of the mysterious noise. When you uncover the sound's source, you find that it's much less exciting than you thought it would be. A small skydancer sits in the clearing, and as he repairs the hinges of a door it makes that distinct clinking noise that drew you in.

It takes a moment or two for the dragon to notice you. When he does, you wish that he hadn't — despite the breed's purported grace and beauty, something about his face frightens you, and frankly, he is rather ugly. When he smiles, it has no charm; two sharp fangs protrude crookedly (and threateningly) from his snout. The skydancer seems to take no notice of your distaste, however, and he welcomes you warmly.

"Greetings, stranger," he says. "It doesn't seem to me that you meant to come here. Regardless, you have now crossed into the outskirts of our humble clan Corona. My name is Melliorn."

You weren't expecting the dragon to be so... eloquent. You give him a timid salutation in return, making a mental note of the sharpness of his claws and the definition in his muscles. You do think that you are being a bit ridiculous, but your feet still urge you to turn and run and never look back.

"I must say, traveler, you do seem a bit weary," Melliorn continues. "In fact, you're turning a bit green. We have plenty of herbal remedies in the main towers of our clan, or perhaps a glass of tea is all you need..."

Something about the dragon's chivalry persuades you to follow along. After all, a cup of hot tea sounds like a delightful escape from the chilly autumn winds of the Ascent. So you politely and half-reluctantly agree, chatting cordially with the skydancer as you stroll through the bamboo. By the end of your journey, you change your mind on the hideous fellow; it must be what's on the inside that counts.

Melliorn is Corona's patriarch, and quite a fitting role for him it is. Melliorn works tirelessly to ensure that Corona is in its best shape. For Melliorn this typically entails building and reparations, and with the constant influx of strange and often clumsy dragons, there is never a moment when Melliorn finds himself bored. While Petal handles most of the personal work in the clan, Melliorn is a bit more diplomatic in his leadership than his... ahem, quirkier mate. Thus, this dragon does his fair share of directing and scolding as well, but unlike Petal, it is much harder to become upset with Melliorn.

Many wonder just how Petal and Melliorn became a match. Petal simply could not resist Melliorn's chivalrous charms — although he wasn't "beautiful" in the way that she always imagined her mate to be, his noble personality enchanted her all the same. As for Melliorn, well, he simply stopped to admire Petal's craftsmanship one fateful day. From there, she managed to charm him in return. After asking for advice on tower construction, she told him that her clan was taking applications for a handsome patriarch. It was the first time handsomeness had ever been used in conjunction with him, and then and there he fell in love.

As Petal concerns herself mostly with things of beauty, it is up to Melliorn to handle the small amount of raiders that trouble Corona's territory. Such encounters have only happened once or twice, and each time Melliorn ensured that minimal damage was done to both sides. Melliorn advises Corona's guards to subdue and not kill if at all possible; consequently, Corona has very little blood on its hands.

Melliorn instilled a sense of nobleness into his and Petal's children, Gwyn and Kieran; perhaps it was this nobility that caused the two to fly off and join the Windsinger's army. While Melliorn does miss them dearly, he tries to give the same sense of purpose to every hatchling in the clan. Corona has yet to produce a genuinely ill-spirited dragon, despite its fair share of grumps, and though Melliorn would never take that credit, Petal insists that it most definitely isn't any of her doing.

While it is universally agreed upon that he is handsome and endearing, Melliorn does have a bit of insecurity about his appearance. He hoards tiny amounts of treasure each day to go toward scrolls to give himself a more kingly image, but until then, Petal and the rest of Corona's dragons will love him all the same.
