MATRIARCH—OSTENTATIOUS—INSCRUTABLE
You go to the Windswept Plateau to find peace. Peace is present in the calm sunset and bamboo hues of the Zephyr Steppes, where the altitude is low enough to escape the whirring and swishing of the zealous spiral and skydancer dragons in the Reedcleft Ascent. Here the breeze is gentle and warm, and here the hatchlings hesitantly take flight, filling the air with the unabashed laughter of youth. You go to the Windswept Plateau to find peace, but today you find a face full of pink feathers; today you are swiftly thrown off balance by a small but forceful something. When you emerge from the bamboo bushes, your gaze is met by that of a small fae dragon. She disrupts the muted shades of the plateau with the loud vividness of her pink and rose tones. She blinks at you expressionlessly with her head tilted sideways, yet her ever-expressive crest twitches to and fro. A petal jumper trembles on top of her pretty pink neck bow, twirling a violet petal between its legs. The familiar's purple eyes assess you inquisitively. Your gaze darts between the fae and the petal jumper. Your body aches from the impact of your fall. You are full of anticipation, somehow. "Oh," says the fae. The wings of the petal jumper quiver. "You were in my way." A calm breeze stirs the fae's rose-feathered wings. Her claws dig into the dirt. You feel your expression morph into a new one, the corners of your mouth inching downward and the crease between your brows deepening. You create your new expression in vain; nothing evokes emotion from the dragon before you, and the only reaction comes from her crest frills, which shudders sporadically yet gives you no indication of her mood. You open your mouth to speak, but your words are caught on the breeze. After a moment's pause, the fae takes flight. A storm of rose feathers scatters in the wind, and the fae's pink body flutters away toward the Cloudsong. The Zephyr Steppes are orange, green, and peaceful once more, and the fae's spell is over; the soreness in your limbs subsides, your brow slowly unknits itself, and the corners of your mouth stretch lazily outward. A single violet petal twirls softly in the summer breeze. |
Petal is the unlikely matriarch of clan Corona. It must be obvious that she never quite planned to be a leader; rather, she always considered herself first and foremost to be a collector of "pretty things." In the first weeks of her existence, this meant that she hoarded a variety of shiny, fluffy, and all-around gaudy apparel items for dressing up. Soon enough the shining scales of her fellow dragons began to catch her eye, so now she collects clan members as well.
It would be a mistake to assume that Petal is superficial. If you could understand the ruffling and swaying and twitching of her expressive crest, you would find that she has a heart for much more than her aesthetic. Though it was difficult for her clan members to understand her at first, they soon began to see that — despite her frankness and her blankness — she is actually quite an adept leader. Being a fae dragon, she has an acute sense of the magical and emotional auras surrounding her clan members. Her lack of skill with words translates (surprisingly) into fantastic leadership; by using candid and objective opinions, she can quickly end any arguments or difficulties that may arise. It must be a surprise for anyone to learn that her mate is Melliorn. Petal believes in the objectivity of beauty, and if you ask her, Melliorn is objectively hideous — not to mention Melliorn's unfortunate color scheme of avocado and silver. Yet Petal would also say that you can't place bows or feathers or petals on love, and when asked, the only explanation she has for her choice of mate is a simple spasm of her crest. Petal spends most of her days flying about doing whatever suits her fancy. As a member of the wind flight, she is rather... well, flighty. Some days she hunts for shiny things; some days she worries over the clan's hatchlings; and some days she tags along with the hunters and tries not to get blood on her pretty pink bows. Petal's tendency to wander is precisely how she stumbles upon new clan members, charming them with her unusual personality. It is truly a wonder that such a peculiar leader with such peculiar habits can lead a clan. But we must all keep in mind that faes are known for their magic — and maybe her success is simply magical.
