“The desert's an old dream of the sea.” — Holly Ringland

tumblr_ountepG0iy1tv56zio9_75sq.png

Marlen is the lost merchant of the desert. He claims there’s a sea at the edge of the whispering sands, but no one quite believes him. No one else has ever seen it. Yet somehow, he always has wares that only the sea could provide. Beautiful shells, delicious fish, sea glass so beautiful it could be used as its own currency. Crab, scallops, clams, the whole lot. Food that the desert would never know otherwise.

While he swears up and down that the sea is real, and he has proof in his wares, when a dragon asks to accompany him to the sea, he always refuses. As exasperated as he gets when dragons claim the sea isn’t real, you’d think he’d want to show them the proof. In reality, the sea is his sanctuary. It’s quiet, unlike the desert. The whispering fades to nothing as he wades into the water, the calming sound of the water taking over.

He spends his days there – the desert would drive him mad otherwise. Over the years, he’s developed a tolerance for the whispers, but that doesn’t mean he can stand it all day long. Some ask why he doesn’t just stay by the ocean – he has all the food he could ever ask for, why would he venture out into the desert that he warily trudges through in order to bring dragons his wares? The truth is, his curiosity gets the better of him. The dragons of the desert are eccentric – they have to be to reside there. One day, he hopes to find one he can share the sea with, one that completes him in a way no one ever has.
━─━────༺༻────━─━
I wandered for what felt like hours, waiting for the sea to make its appearance. The sea was funny like that – no one else had ever been able to find it, because it was never in the same place twice. It called out to me and I would wander in its direction, until finally the horizon would become nothing but waves. I hoped that my fish wouldn’t go bad before I found it. The sea’s voice was very different from the whispers – a light, beckoning melody where the whispers were harsh and hushed.

Soon enough, the horizon began to turn. The bright white of the sand became a deep blue of the ocean, and its song grew louder. The whispers began to fade away, giving space for the sound of the waves to take over. I drew close to the shoreline, taking a few steps into the water and breathing in the crisp, salty air. The sand no longer burned my feet, the sounds were no longer overwhelming. Instead I was met with peace, tranquility, and a space that only I’d ever seen. This place was mine, and I was home.
