“Truth is more peculiar than fiction.”

No one knows quite where Kyrian came from. He appeared quite suddenly in the dead of night seeking shelter from the rains — covered in wounds and scars, some still dripping with blood and others weeks old — humbly requesting a place to stay for his mate and himself. Most would have turned him away, and others still would’ve slammed the door after taking one glance at his looming figure, but Cymeri, the clan leader, gave them sanctuary. The two were certainly an odd pair, silent and watchful, and the other dragons eyed them warily. He kept their distance from the rest, preferring to dine on his own than to mingle, and his soaking wet and blood stained appearances doing nothing to endear himself to the clan.

But as time passed, so too did their suspicion. Kyrian proved himself in their eyes, again and again. He was valiant, going into battles courageously, and he took control of squadrons easily, his words strong and sure, coming out on top of even the most hopeless of situations. A brilliant tactician, an even better warrior, and with dashing looks enough to make anyone swoon, it was no wonder Kyrian was so beloved. He had a noble demeanor and a confident poise, his presence enough to command attention whenever he entered a room. His opinion was appreciated, his prowess more so, but even as Kyrian made a name for himself and his popularity grew, so did his notoriety.

Rumors of his past followed him, each tale as unlikely as the next. They said that he was the missing prince from a kingdom long lost to ruin and raids, come to hide and bide his time for when he could finally reclaim his throne from the usurpers. Others swore that he was the reincarnation of a once great warrior, wielding his prowess in battle efficiently and remorselessly, come to aid them for a vow unfulfilled. And then there were some who spoke of him with whispered awe, their eyes wide and shining as they told a tale of Kyrian’s strange markings coming to life as he leapt into battle, creating an incredibly powerful magic attack that wiped out an entire Emperor, but leaving him scarred and drained and without a home to return to.

No one quite knew what to believe, and with such wild rumors, most were quick to cast them off as idle gossip. And whenever asked, Kyrian would neither confirm nor deny their claims, instead smiling softly and redirecting the conversation to another topic. By the time their conversation ended, no one ever felt the need to question further, feeling silly for having believed such crazy conspiracy theories in the first place.

Despite all his praise and reputation, Kyrian held himself apart from his peers, his smiles never quite reaching his eyes, and his grins sometimes just a bit too sharp. He was untouchable, aloof, possessing an almost otherworldly aura. And it made him that much more desirable.

He was like a god among men, a physical manifestation that they could all strive for, yet ethereal enough that they could never hope to surpass him. But most who viewed him this way were teased mercilessly by the others. Kyrian was just like any other dragon. Regal, powerful, perhaps a bit enigmatic, and most definitely reserved, but still the same as the rest of them.

On moonlit nights, Kyrian could be seen taking walks with his mate, sampling the grounds and chatting quietly, amicably, to themselves. Their love for each other could be seen clear as day, and their intimacy just as well. On those occasions, even the most devoted thought their worship of him was folly. Kyrian truly was just the same as any other dragon.

And if sometimes inexplicable things happened around Kyrian, or he sometimes disappeared without a word or even a trace… well, that was just conjecture, wasn’t it?
