“Some of us are born with a calling.”

Aerin always believed she had a purpose. As a hatchling, she loved to look up at the stars and imagine what meaning she might find in them. Some said that the stars were prophetic, promising glimpses into a future or divining the fate of individuals. The idea enchanted her. An adventurous spirit was already growing within her heart, and she was excited to see what the future held. Might she find her purpose among those stars?

As she grew, she explored her childhood dream. She delved into magic tomes and taught herself the beginnings of sorcery. She studied ancient texts and sought out seers. Her passion came not from desperation or greed, like so many young magicians, but from a genuine and enthusiastic desire for knowledge and fulfillment.

Unfortunately, the answers lay beyond her. Intricate star-charts and the murmuring of seers didn’t bring her any closer to unlocking the mysteries of the stars. Her clan, nestled deeply in the Plaguebringer’s domain, had only limited access to written knowledge. Her avenues ran dry. Many others would have abandoned her quest or relegated it to a hobby, but Aerin refused. If she wanted to learn more, she had to leave.

She traveled on her own for some time, but eventually came to her present clan. She got along with the others famously, for they loved her personable, trusting, and calm personality. There, she was able to further her education and become more adept in magic. At long last, she was able to read the stars.

But she didn’t see her fate.

She wasn’t discouraged. It was part of growing up, she supposed. A younger Aerin might have grappled with that discovery, wondering what her fate could possibly be if it wasn’t written for her. But in her travels and her studies, she’d come to learn much about the world. She was wiser, and she now knew that fate was an indeterminable as it was fickle.

Her childhood curiosity sated, she looked forward. There, she found Rowan.

She’d been there when Rowan arrived at the clan’s borders. She recalled all the dark whispers about him, and she’d heard the rumors of late-night meetings by the leadership. They didn’t trust the newcomer. Aerin saw something else, however. She looked at him and she saw a hard worker and a studious mind. She saw someone who wanted something and had dedicated all of his strength to obtaining it. She saw something affably familiar.

She befriended him, and soon, she fell in love with him. Her empathy and appreciation helped soothe some of his rage. She helped him learn to keep his shade-brought mood swings under control. It wasn’t an easy task, but it seemed like a natural part of their bond. She completed him in a way that nobody else had, and she found in him part of what she’d been looking for all along. This was part of her purpose. She’d found someone whose pain she could ease, someone who shared her passion for magic, and someone who trusted her as completely as she trusted them.

Their romance flourished, and they became inseparable. Rowan is better able to control his urges these days, but Aerin stays beside him just the same. They are well known in the clan, and often envied for the tightness of their bond, despite how different they seem. Aerin doesn’t think it’s strange at all, though. She and Rowan have more in common than the others will ever know, and they complete each other in ways they will never understand.

That much of their story may as well be written in the stars.
