Casper is one of the clan leaders. Technically. His older sister Imogen usually handles all the management stuff, which more than fine by him. He helps out as much as he can, but for the most part, he’s a librarian.

He works in the clan records, managing the immense amount of statements and letters and contracts and other miscellaneous formal documents that trading clans tend to generate. He’s not as efficient with getting things ordered as Imogen is, but he’s diligent and genuinely enjoys sorting things and making sense of clutter. When he’s not in the records room, he’s in the actual library helping Loris. He helps grab and carry books, helps to transcribe, writes notes, and generally does his part to keep the library orderly.

One of his biggest ambitions is to write the whole history of the clan, from foundation to present day, and to keep it updated as time goes on. He interviews older members of the clan, trying to get a consistent picture of what life was like. His efforts have been stymied a little bit as many of the founders have since left and most dragons who are still around were too young to recall much. His current efforts can be read here.

Casper, like his older sister, was adopted. He knows he was hatched by Chalie, but doesn’t know how she got a hold of his egg. It doesn’t bother him too much, but sometimes he thinks about his birth parents and if they miss him. He tries not to think about them and focusses on his actual family instead. He’s the middle child: Imogen, his sister, is five years older than him. Eden, his brother, is two years younger.

He was raised mostly by Imogen. Casper was hatched when the clan was still in Shadow, but when they moved to Wind six years later, Chalie started to get distant. She went off alone more and more often, leaving him with Imogen for increasingly long periods of time. Chalie never left entirely, not until Casper was much older, but he didn’t really see her much. He knows that she and Imogen fought a lot, but they kept him mostly out of it.

Casper found his charge very early: Loris came to Kiuvuik when Casper had just turned two. He was too little to understand why he felt so strongly about Loris and why he needed to protect him, but it never occurred to him to ask. It wasn’t until four years later when Imogen found her charge that he learned what charges were. He hasn’t told Loris yet. (The only person who knows is Imogen)

Casper and Imogen are very close. They talk a lot and try their best to be open and to help each other. Casper tries his best to tell Imogen that he appreciates all she did for him when they were younger, and Imogen tries to give Casper any opportunities she can so he can be happy.

– EDEN + younger brother
Eden and Casper are a little more distant. They’re trying to get to know each other and to make a better relationship, but it’s kinda weird after being separate for so long. They talk a lot and try to hang out when they can. It’s not perfect, but it’s getting there.

– LORIS + mentor/charge
Loris is almost a paternal figure in Casper’s life, as he had a pretty fundamental role in his upbringing. They’re good friends and have a running competition to see who can tell the worst shaggy dog joke. Casper hasn’t told Loris about the whole charge thing yet, but it’s a matter of time. Their bond is strong enough to give him premonitions, and the number of falling books he’s taken for Loris is rising.

– CHALIE + mother
Casper and Chalie don’t talk much. This isn’t much of an issue for him; they never talked much in the first place. He doesn’t really have any strong feelings about his adoptive mother, but he does have some resentment over being basically abandoned. After Chalie left for Shadow, they haven’t spoken.

Casper has hundreds of terrible jokes memorized, and he can and will recite them one after another for hours. They range from silly one-liners to massive epics that take twenty minutes to tell properly. Not a one of them are good. They’re all groaners, jokes where the only funny parts are people’s expressions of mock disgust after the punchline.

Despite living right on the edge of the Sea of a Thousand Currants, very few dragons in Kiuvuik like to swim. Casper is definitely one of the handful who does. He adores being in the water. If he’s not in the library, there’s a good chance he’s playing in the Sea or in one of the innumerable channels of the Reedcleft Ascent.

hbbbbbbuDUST AND COBWEBS

As much as he and Loris dust and clean, they can’t keep up with the amount of dust and spiderwebs that the library just seems to generate. (It probably doesn’t help that the library is one of the few rooms in the clan without windows.) Because he spends almost his entire day there, Casper’s almost always covered in dust with cobwebs hanging from his horns.
