______ Her claws scrabbled against the slippery, rocky slope, the wet surface hard to grip. Her wings ached, her back ached, she could no longer feel her tail - she didn't want to look back and see it gone, so she avoided it at all costs, instead doing her very best to push herself up and over the cliff side with her arms and legs. She could no longer hear the cries of her lover above her. Had she flown to safety as she had asked? She hoped beyond hope that she had. The thought of her bright, sweet, gentle lover dead in the mud and rain sent a powerful, painful shock through her chest. She couldn't lose another. She couldn't bare it. The pain would simply be too great.

______ She managed to pull herself over the cliff moments later, her limbs shaking with the strain, her wings twitching and flexing slightly - painfully. Were they broken? The fall had likely broken some of her bones, her frail wing bones more likely then any of her other ones. She looked around with bleary eyes, seeing no sign of her beloved mate - and that was a good sign. It meant that the shade had not killed her. Had likely not taken control of her. She breathed a sigh of relief, letting her eyes slide shut as she rested in the mud, ignoring the wet, uncomfortable feeling of it and the rain on her scales. She was so, so tired...

______ But she could not give up. She could not let herself fall into eternal sleep - not here, not now. Not without seeing her again.

______ She grit her teeth, pushing herself up with immense effort, struggling to put one foot in front of the other as her heavy wings dragged across the ground beside her, as the fur of her headdress clung to her like a second skin, weighing her down. As the tattered banner that lay draped across her useless wings was dragged through the mud. A symbol of her shame. A symbol of her inability to protect the only one she cared for.

______ "I will find her." She'd breathe out harshly, brown eyes narrowed into a severe glare as she headed in the direction of the pillar. She would scale it and take off from the top to ride the wind to the call of her mate. She could feel her, even now. Could feel the warmth in her chest that was their bond. She was not dead, merely lost.

______ "Even if the Gods try to intervene, I will find you, Ira." She swore to the sound of the frigid rain pelting the wet earth beneath her as she walked.

______ "I promise."
