Biography

Orpheous - The Outcast King
He awoke to heat. Blinding, shifting heat, a heat that seeped into his scales and made his feathers cling together as if they were melting. It was an intense, incredibly unwelcome feeling - he'd never grown used to it, not in the days since his hatching.

He'd never get used to it.

His mother shoved him from the roiling pit of lava that was her nest with a violent shove he was not unused to, immediately dipping her elegantly colored foot back into the searing lava, as if she was comfortable in that blazing heat that he so loathed.

He knew he was the odd one here, though, the only one among them to despise the heat, to be so completely uncomfortable in it.

He pushed himself up, shaking out his silver and white feathers and stretching his crest slowly as he woke himself up, the clan milling about around him, giving him a wide berth - ignoring him for now. It was better then them adding another scar to his dark scales or ripping more feathers from his shiny feathers, though, and he was more then happy to leave them to their happy lives.

He slid quietly along the ground, moving like water over the hot rocks and dirt and sand towards his chosen destination - the coffers. He slips into the cave behind a particularly bright orange and red Coatl, hugging the walls and staying just far back enough to be out of the range of the male's sight - a skill he'd mastered in the short time he'd spent here.

"I know you're there." The Coatl he was following snarled lowly as they came upon the large pond they kept their seafood in, turning violent orange eyes on him where he cowered against the farthest wall, his own vibrant orange eyes giving him away in the deep darkness of the shadows. He snapped his eyes shut tight, the brilliant white crackle shifting endlessly along his scales dimming into a muted grey - helping him hide.

The colorful male just laughed at him and his flimsy camouflage, getting the food he wanted from the pond and exiting without another word, amused at the cursed hatchling's antics.

It's the same, all throughout his hatchlinghood and into his adolescence.

The clan leader is particularly angry one day, though.

And his brutal, frenzied claws gouged bright red lines into his sides and ripped colorless feathers from his wings, cruel and so, so angry.

Angry with the supposedly cursed child that had hatched into his vibrant clan - the cursed child, a bad omen, nothing but the cause of the bad luck they'd been having. The source of their misfortune, less then a living being, less then even the fish they consumed.

A problem he wanted to deal with.

He escaped, wounded, barely living, into Lightning territory - safety, as far as he's concerned.

He's filled with such pain it's incredible he's still moving, even to himself. He doesn't know how he as the will to continue on.

But there's anger, too. All encompusing, violent hatred mixed with such an overflowing well of white-hot fury coming from the deepest parts of his very soul that it almost burns.

It's so similar to the feeling of the heat of his previous clan that it brings back memories he doesn't want to recall, memories that only stoke the flames and have them roaring higher and fiercer then before - a dangerous, wild inferno he can barely control, his orange eyes filled and blazing with his hate.

How dare they? Just because he was born without their flashy, eye-bleedingly-bright colors, they think him cursed? A bad omen? He wasn't cursed.

He was better then them. His colorless feathers and scales were beautiful, shiny and blended in so well with the darkness he liked. He was perfect.

Determination and rage battled in his eyes and he slunk along the plateaus of Lightning territory, sure in his next task, sure in his future.

He'd show them.

Orpheous, or Orphey, is a Coatl with a thick hard shell around his heart. He was feared and hated by his previous Clan mates and ultimately exiled, making him hate the colorful feathers and scales of most of his species. He had always felt a draw towards the Tangled Wood, as if the shadows called for him, and so when he was cast out, he went there.

It took him ages to figure out what to do once he'd stepped into the welcoming, sunken darkness of Shadow territory. But, once he'd figured it out, he was determined to see it through. He'd create a clan that welcomed other Coatl like him - those with colorless features that were cast out as bad omens, those who were different, unloved, unneeded like he had been.

The first dragon he stumbled across was an old, shining red and white Pearlcatcher, all that was left of the shambles her old Clan had become. She was warm and motherly and, no matter how much the angry Coatl struck out at her, she stood tall and resolute, enduring his attacks and trying her very best to calm him.

Her name was simply 'Lore', and her brilliant crimson scales and never ending warmth and kindness shone like a torchlight in the darkness to the lost Orpheous who'd known nothing but hatred and fear for his short life so far. She became his closest friend, and was all too happy to help him create a sanctuary for the strange here in the shadows.

As a dragon, Orpheous is generally cold, callous, and violent to outsiders - distrustful and angry at everyone but those under his care. It is hard to get on his good side - or anywhere near his clan mates or lair - and he's more likely to strike out and harm others if they get too close then ask them to leave calmly.

Towards his clan mates, he is a cool and level-headed leader who will do anything to protect his clan mates, his friends and family. He is particularly close to two male Coatls - Paradox, the plagueling with an affinity for ice - and Sarcasm, the one with purple-black scales and bright white feathers that spoke endlessly about apparel and accessorizing. And, of course, he shares a special bond with the old red Pearlcatcher Lore, who he spends long, sleepless nights talking to in a mix of his kind's language and broken draconic.

Other clans label him the 'Beloved Outcast King' or the 'Ringleader of the oddities', and he's completely fine with each title.

But, truly, deep down, he's just a Coatl that was mistreated as a hatchling, that want's nothing but to save others from the hurt and hate he'd suffered from.

You'd be surprised how utterly someone can be destroyed.

Since birth, they have called him an ill omen. Nothing but a dragon full of bad luck.

He was cast out. Banished from the only place he'd known, where he was born.

He found his way to the Tangled Wood, the shadows calling to him like no other.

Maybe he really was cursed. Most seemed to believe so because of his colorless scales and feathers - white and black and grey.

He's lived in the Driftwood Drag for a year, now. He's gathered a colony of like-minded coatls that have been cast from the Emberglow Hearth for one reason or another and now rules over them.

The bright orange of the Hearth has long since died from his eyes.
