Biography

"The lightning shrieked through the skies for two days as the worst storm in decades pummeled the sea to the west of Lantern Port. Water spouts could be seen dancing across the sea, and coronal discharges crowned the spires of the lighthouse and the library alike.

Many feared a breach in the Veil was coming again, this time with even worse consequences before. But aside from a lot of rain, there was no damage done to the Isle of Prufrock or the surrounding landscape.

When the storm cleared, many headed to the beaches to see what flotsam had washed ashore. And it was there, barnacle encrusted and caught among netting, that a single egg was found washed ashore. Nearby wreckage included shell jewelry, mostly too mangled to salvage, and a shipping manifest from the Sea of a Thousand Currents for a ship called the Blue Horizon, captained by a wind dragon (guessing by how often Windsinger is referenced in the log) named Lindree. Listed in the manifest were two water eggs, which Lindree claimed as their own.

No sign of Lindree was found. Boats were dispatched and fly-overs were conducted in search of further debris. Only a sail-tangled mast could be found. And for those who had an eye for this sort of thing, it seemed the egg was just about ready to hatch..." - ixris

For an island, they had surprisingly few water dragons, and it fell on those few to attempt to care for the shipwrecked egg, to nurture it as best they could in the hopes that the hatchling forming inside would survive. Much to their relief, the child was healthy, seemingly (at least physically) free from the damage wrought by the destructive storm. The water tundra Evrain recalled her own arrival on the island - she had come of her own accord, padding off in a little raft in search of adventure when she was still but a hatchling rather than being washed ashore by the forces of nature, but surely the threads of destiny that had brought them to Prufrock weren't so different. She felt a bond for the little hatchling, whom she named Ebb, and she decided to raise her in the lighthouse, giving her a room at the top of the tower, right under the light. Her lover Nathaniel was a bit jealous at first to be sharing her attentions with a needy newborn, but when the hatchling began to show signs of the sight...well, the crafty tundra decided she might prove useful after all and occasionally brought her little gifts and trinkets from his market stalls to curry her favor.

Even at an early age, Ebb was always very fluid - shifting between gender identities like the tide going in and out, focusing variously on things past and in the future instead of living solely in the present. The fluidity of her gender identity confused many of the clan's dragons. Some knew what it was like to feel trapped in the wrong body, while others expressed masculinity and femininity irregardless of their gender, but none switched back and forth, sometimes male and sometimes female. He was quick to inform others when he was male or when she was female, and while those around her often struggled to keep up, they did their best to refer to him in his preferred manner and to respect his identity. Most members of the clan had at some point in their lives felt different or misunderstood and didn't want their foundling to grow up feeling this way.

Ebb's cryptic remarks were another cause for confusion, as was her ability to flow freely between the past and the future. He displayed the worrisome habit of rarely being in the present moment and had difficulty anchoring himself to reality, even his own identity. Evrain was quick to seek help from Calamity in the hopes that the coatl could help Ebb navigate her visions without losing her sanity. Both were glad to have someone else in the clan who saw troubling things, though confusion arose when they didn't always see the same vision or interpret it in the same way.

Even how she receives her visions shifts - sometimes they come when looking into her pearl, or a body of water, or in dreams. Oftentimes he can see glimpses of a dragon's past or future when interacting with them. This can make social interactions difficult, though she is getting better at not blurting out uncomfortable revelations at inopportune times.

While he can see usually see glimpses of the past and future of others with some concentration, his own is a mystery to him. She occasionally dreams of the wreck, but she wonders if the "visions" she has simply come from what others in the clan have told her of her origins. Ebb hopes to one day learn where he came from and find out if he has any living family. He doesn't dislike Lantern Port or the dragons around him, but he wonders what it would be like living among his real kin. She occasionally sends out letters in bottles in the hope that the currents might direct them to someone who can provide her with some answers.

Ebb has no trouble seeing spirits. Ghosts are drawn to her, and she often lets them temporarily reside in or pull residual energy from her pearl so that she can speak with them. She keeps hoping that one might be from "her" shipwreck, but so far she has only encountered a few who perished nearby in accident or mishap...and a couple from long ago who were slain in a massacre caused by Vespers' former lover. Greatly disturbed by the latter, he confided in Shadowstar and asked for advice. The coatl asked Ebb to keep quiet about these ghosts, wanting to protect and shield his fellow leader and friend.

Though both she and Calamity have seen their fair share of disturbing visions, neither of them could tell what it was that Cecil saw that led to the mass evacuation of the clan's territory. That hasn't stopped Ebb from continuing to try, though - maybe if he can see what is coming, he can see a way to avoid it.

Letter in a Bottle wrote:
The bottle, tinted with orange and pink hues, still smells faintly of peaches and is stamped with a stylized K at the bottom. The letter inside is on fine stationary, written painstakingly to be as legible as possible. Any dragon opening it who knows much of magic would notice that a simple spell to keep the contents waterproof had been cast upon the bottle before it was given to the sea.

I don't know who you are, but then, I don't know who I am, an egg washed ashore with no family, no connections save those who adopted me. I sit near the top of the lighthouse and stare out at the ocean that brought me here, wondering from where I came. I stare into my pearl, hoping that it will give me answers. Sometimes I see the past. I cannot see my own.

Would my family even like me, if they still live? I am a fluid creature, sometimes one gender and sometimes another, sometimes living in the future and other times the past. I have been told that I am difficult, but I also know that I am loved here. They are always eager to offer help, this clan where I live, perhaps too eager. They do not know a stranger, even welcoming spirits in their midst. But neither dragons nor spirits can give me the answers I seek, not with all the books in the vast library spire, nor with all of the knowledge of other realms. For someone as flowing and shifting as I am, perhaps it is odd that I crave roots, something to anchor me, but I do. I want to know where I came from, if there is anyone out there connected to me by blood or fortune beyond those who have taken me in and sheltered and nurtured me.

Maybe this bottle will reach someone who can give me answers. Whether you can or not, I wish you well, reader, and hope that the sea is kind to you.
