Rum
Primary Role: Runecaster
(Acolyte to the Temple of Starlight.)

Joy and Struggle in Enchantment.

As a hatchling Rum had been given to a temple of the Plaguebringer, convinced he was unwanted and consumed by dreams of fire, ice, and lightning that made no sense. Strangely when he had come of age, he'd felt no compulsion to find his charge and he'd begun to worry that something must truly be wrong with him. The reclusive dragon spent long years traveling from shrine to shrine, watching rituals at a distance that he was not allowed to take part in. Even as a hatchling he had been unable to access any plague magic, the few 'successes' at casting had been too strenuous and left him abed for days. Whatever his tutor had seen in his casting had deeply disturbed him and Rum had been banned from joining them since. He was not strong enough, they said. Sullied, weak, but they could fix that.

The closer the priests grew to an answer, one that would make him more, more like them and more deeply entrenched in their magic, Rum grew increasingly restless. Perhaps this was a sign of his Search at last?

Though they had banned him from participating, it didn't stop him from dabbling. The swirls of his magic when it manifested was hot and bright as flames came to him, but in the next moments bitterly cold, making his fingers ache then tingle even after the power faded to nothing.

Runes were simple in comparison and he'd had long stretches of time alone in which to practice reading them.

He felt compelled to cast the assortment of carved bones, teeth, and stones that night. Try as he might when he selected only one from his bag he received the same rune. Treachery and Grounding. Once, twice, six times. He placed them back in their container and tried for more answers, tumbling five of them out onto the stone surface before him.

Treachery and Grounding. Search and Truth. Mistaken Identity. Lust. Transformation.

Rum had sat in silence for a long time before making up his mind and gathering the few things he knew the temple wouldn't miss and fled before dawn, anxious to leave the temple and then the plaguelands behind. No matter where he went, nothing fit, and his odd mixture of magic made him mistrustful of how others would receive it.

In his wandering he encountered a young fae that playfully teased him after being drawn to admit his doubt, that he must be cursed. "Anyone trying to undo a curse must offer a gift of wine at the Temple of Starlight." Before he could ask further the fae had vanished as neatly as if he had been an illusion. A very solid one, but illusion none the less.

Finding any knowledge or word of this temple had been enough to inspire migraines. When at last he made it he had only the clothes on his back, his small satchel of runes, and an empty belly. With a wry sense of humor Rum offered himself in place of any liquor, thinking his coloring would be enough to satisfy any agreement.

-His claw rests gently on the glass bead atop the ornate pendulum, as he begins by asking simple questions to "warm up"-

"I see, you wish to ask about your friend Rum. Hmm. Very well then. I will break down these questions and ask each separately."

"Will Rum ever learn the truth to what he truly is?" -the pendulum begins to move, but at a slow pace. Seemingly, it moves in a "No" pattern. But, not too rigorously.

"Should he ever try to change back or 'break the curse' he was given?" -the pendulum still continues in it's "No" pattern. This time, a bit faster.

"Will he be at peace with his curse in the future?" -the pendulum almost immediately switches to circle in a "Yes" pattern, almost as if it wasn't even a question.

"Hmm, it does seem that his curse was something placed upon him for a higher purpose, taking that away may not be such a pleasant idea. He will learn what to do in his alien body, but it will take time. Please, send him my regards, and this lovely bell."

-His scribe, Abel, hands you a paper with your fortune written down on it, as well as a crystal, some herbs, and a bell-
