Asphodel

Magic is no replacement for wisdom

As a hatchling, Asphodel loved to frolic in the wilds. She was a free and innocent spirit, uninterested in her father's position as king, and even less interested in one day being queen. She was content to play, explore, and study. She loved books and all manner of learning, and soon developed a deep interest in magic. Her parents first worried at her disinterest in her birthright, but the king soon realized that his daughter would better serve a different fate: she would be a powerful spellcaster and wise advisor if educated properly.

So Asphodel was committed to her studies, but never lost her love of exploration and fantasy. A recurring piece of her childhood was the cloud of pixies that followed her at night - she'd first seen them when she was very small, and they were immediately attracted to her budding power. The pixies would come to her in the evenings and swirl around her with their delicate wings, beckoning her to play with them. They became her dependable companions, through she kept them secret in order to protect them from curious eyes or greedy mouths.

One day, well into her adulthood, Asphodel drifted into the forest with her curious friends. In a night of dizzying adventure, Asphodel lost track of time and blacked out, only to find herself lying in the forest the next day. Her pearl lay fractured on the ground beside her. It seemed that her friends' magic had transformed her, intentionally or not, into a fae dragon!

Her power awakened even more afterwards. She was now the greatest enchantress in the clan, much to her father's pride and her mother's sorrow. Oleander would have preferred a queen, but sometimes things don't work out as planned.

After her father's fall, Asphodel was interrogated harshly by the new rulers. She reluctantly renounced her father in order to maintain her position in the clan. In a gesture of goodwill, and to tie himself to the former regime's legitimacy, the new king named Asphodel as his Royal Enchantress. She is comfortable in her new position - it allows her to exercise her great power and affords her many comforts.

All is not forgotten, though. While she has no love lost for her mother, Asphodel still ventures into the swamp to visit her father. Their meetings are brief and secret, but to Asphodel, they are as sacred as her midnight meetings with the faeries.
