Fallen King
Once a ruler, now an outcast.
He couldn't save them. He tried, but he failed.

There was a time when the clan prospered. By the time Hemlock was cast into the swamp, that time had already passed. Hemlock was once the clan's patriarch and king. He was a strong but petty ruler, who led his clan with efficiency rather than sentiment. He worked hard for their benefit and devoted his life to that task, but none could deny the selfish thread which ran through him. He was demanding and sharp, but his intentions were good. Vain and assured of his own wit, he seated himself comfortably at the clan's head, surveying his sunlit domain with pride. However, what works during peace may not work during war. When the beastclans came, Hemlock was not prepared. He had never considered war. The clan lived well, and who would ever dare attack them while they bathed in the Lightweaver's glow? The attack came swiftly in the night. He led his warriors against them, but the casualties were already too great. The clan was decimated, and Hemlock sank into despair. In one terrible evening, everything had been taken from them. Soon, he found himself the target of his clanmates' anger and grief. He was deposed, and a new king chosen: a newcomer named Arthur, who had no humor for Hemlock' pleading. The former king was banished to the fringes of the clan, shown mercy only because he was no threat. He lingers there still, huddled on the edges of the community he once ruled, watching with resentment and living in regret. He still thinks about that terrible night, and how no matter what he tells himself, he knows that it was his own fault. He lives in a shallow cave on the swampy border between the clan's territory and the Tangled Wood. He wears a cloak of kelpie skin to protect himself, hoping that it will ward away whatever beasts might be lurking. He has long given up his kingly jewels and other finery. Instead, he lives a simple life, impoverished even beyond his sentence. He is too ashamed to ask the others for further mercy, and too angry with himself to allow it even if it were granted. |
