It caresses and holds. It is honest and kind. He is strongest of soul, he reaches it out to others, shedding light, sharing warmth. He gives because his heart yearns for it. His skin is smooth, no trace of warmongering, no mark inevitably left by the habit of violence. It is pure, nurtured by years of gentleness and peace. He watches over his beloved, with his eyes, with his spirit and with his strength, though it is silent. His might is a solid thing, subtle but carefully honed. The might of compassion. ྿

Survival. Ash grew up learning the harsh word in everything around him. His colony long wrecked by the weight of thousands, the towering trees falling in echoing bellows of the lives of the dragons unfortunate enough to not have seen what was coming. Left in the dust of what he had known, Ash was left to survive on his own. In a world constantly hidden by the swirling mists a brightly coloured hatchling had a small chance of survival. Greens and blues stood out starkly against the dark purples of the surroundings and Ash learned very quickly how to use magic that normally only adults in the colony were able to use. Years passed as he wandered the woods, avoiding the presence of other dragons and scavenging the remains of others hunts to survive, sheltering in tree hollows and roots. Days blended together as he wandered, learning various forms of magic. His spare time was spent reading books that he would find in abandoned clan spaces, devoid of life. Many nights were spent above the thick canopy, watching as the stars shifted in the skies and looking out towards the various other realms that scattered across Sornieths surface. Some days he sheltered at the edges of the forest, watching as dragons flew by, heading to their elements. He had spent a long time reading about the various realms of elements in the world. Sometimes he wondered if he could find a place to live somewhere beyond the mists that had sheltered him and kept him alive. To the south he could see the lava shooting miles into the air, heat waves distorting the land around it even from this far. He watched as it streamed from the furnace in relentless waves and slowly flowed into the water where it fizzled out in great columns of steam. In front of the waste lay the water realm. It was quiet, the water calm most days. Sometimes Ash took to it and lay in the shallows, watching as fish darted by his talons with no fear before disappearing back into the coral that covered the floor of the sea as far as his eyes could see before dropping away into darkness. Towards the east lay the realms of Light and Lightning, twins of sending light into the dark. It seemed night never fell on the cheerful realm of Light, dragons bustling all day long, not so different from the dayless realm of Shadow. Beside it Lighting constantly had storms, light streaking across the skies and hitting the large metal contraptions in striking displays that sent sparks flying into the air. West held Wind and Plague. The Plateau was filled with joyful colours, the large dragon balloon Ash had read about always floating next to the ever twisting crescendo. There the dragons flew about all day, flipping and playing in the wind as it blew across the world, reaching shadow in gentle gusts that rustled the grass. Next to Shadow was Plague. Ash had grown up in fear, hiding in shadows and bushes, avoiding every trace of life. But nothing had compared to the foreboding feeling that he had felt the first time he had laid eyes upon the barren wasteland that was Plague. Festering wounds and rotting bones had kept him from ever stepping foot in that direction. Survival was a word he knew. But not in the way that the dragons of Plague knew it. Behind the woods lay the final two realms that he could see from where he spent his time above the trees. The towering behemoth of the Gladekeeper and the Pillar of the World nestled into the arid realm of Earth. Ash knew that somewhere beyond the horizon he could see lay the realms of Ice and Arcane but his courage had its bounds and he knew in his heart that he could not leave Shadow. This was the home he knew no matter how much he wished for a new beginning. The Tangled Woods had taught him loss and pain. They had taught him that nothing lasts forever but they also taught him survival and how to fight for the things that he wanted. And for that he had to thank them. Over time he learned how to blend in, using his own knowledge of magic and manipulation of the magic that flowed through everything to change his own colours to hide away. Maybe one day he would find someone to start a new colony with, to build a home and a family with but until then he would simply do what he did best. Survive. |
