Ah, love. Many believe that it's most beautiful when the bloom is fresh on the rose. After all, doesn't everyone sigh about young love, love at first sight, first kisses and first dates? And nothing is sadder than love faded, love lost, lovers ripped untimely from their beloved by the cruel claws of fate. That's where Velvet comes in. For a short time, she can make that rose bloom again. Velvet is a necromancer of a very particular sort. She only calls back the spirits of lovers who left their beloved behind them in death. For a very particular fee, whatever gift their love gave them that they valued most, Velvet will work her magic to bring them back, for a short time, from beyond the veil. She calls spirits only, no true raising of the dead which she flat out refuses to do. Zombies and animated corpses have no place in what she does. Velvet sees many different sorrowing clients in her profession. Those mourning a lover taken from them in war or accident, starcrossed romances where one half chose to end it rather than marry another, guardians hoping to see their beloved charge one more time... She welcomes all who come to her, inviting them to sit down and tell her their woes. When the payment has been given, she begins his work. A dark room lit only by candles, the almost sickly sweet scent of some strange incense, glowing spell circles and runes, and in the middle of it all the Guardian, the flickering lights making her facepaint look very like a skull. Velvet has one very strict rule of conduct during her summonings. The client is not, under any circumstances, allowed to speak. She can bring up the shade of their loved one, a flickering, ghostly image that moves, speaks, sighs like the real thing once did in life, but they can not speak a word back. To do so shatters the spell, sends the spirit on swift wings back whence they came. And she can not perform the spell twice. If they, overcome with emotion, let their love's name pass their lips, then they will vanish, the moment gone and never able to be retrieved. She offers one last meeting, no more. Velvet rarely allows herself to show anger, but those who ruin one of her summonings almost as soon as they've begun see that fearsome side of her. You see, in order to call back the shade of one beloved Velvet must feel that love for them herself. True love can even conquer death, it's true, but they never say whose. She asks for the most valued trinket as payment, but in truth that's just the vessel she uses to feel and understand what she needs to summon the spirit. She gets to feel, for as long as the summoning lasts, that love vicariously through them. If the summoning is prematurely ended, she too keenly feels that love ripped away from her again. She wants that feeling, however fleeting and borrowed, to last. It's the closest she will ever get to what she lost, a very long time ago... ~by Mirrorstone |
