Alcia never shared the adventurous nature of her nestmates. She was always quieter, more withdrawn than her boisterous brothers. Quite content with the tales she could bother out of Arfur or Von. She never understood why her siblings felt the need to abandon her for their Searches.

She has never felt the call to Search, herself; there has never been any desire to disappear into the wilderness and the wilds, but nor does she share her mother's devotion to the clan. She stays, for the most part, on sufferance. Her mother's sentimentality, she suspects. Whether out of gratitude or some desire to see how long she can wait Adhara out, she remains the most taciturn and unapproachable member of the clan.

Alcia is under the impression that the more the clan grows - and it has grown rapidly since her own hatching, as one of the first ten - the more it is put at risk. Friendly as they may be, these new dragons from new clans cannot be trusted. The friendlier they are, the more likely they are to be hiding something.

More and more, she stands in the shadows.

They are her only friends, her only allies in the confusion and mess of the ever expanding citadel of Ista. They lead her to dark, quiet places, where murk and myth shroud the world, to ending points, where the living do not dwell. She sneaks into the graveyards and crypts of other clans and whispers to the dead.

The shadows cannot lie to her. The shadows tell her what to do, how to be one of them, how to live her life apart. Their voice has changed, though, recently. Where there was once a thousand voices hissing in her mind, now there is only one, deep and rich and laughing.

The shadows cannot lie to her. They would not. The shadows are Alcia's only friends, and the laughing voice her only guide in the world. It urges her to find it, to see what hell together they could bring. When it gives the command, she will not refuse.
