Carlysle was born in a nest of chamomile and camphorous hyssop. The warm, dry leaves stuck to her fur and tickled her nose. It was a bed lovingly arranged for a hatchling to sprout. “The chamomile is for clarity, calm, and good dreams,” her father explained. “And the hyssop?” She asked. It had been years since she laid in that nest, but she still wore a sprig of each old flower around her neck, protected by twine. “What was that for?” “Oh, well, hyssop is protective, see… against, ah, evil–” “Tzu just likes how it smells,” her mother interrupted, eyes shining with a wit Carlysle hoped she’d inherited. “But there are scripts on it. Superstitious ones, if you ask me, that claim it wards off malice.” Carlysle laughed, batting her paws on the table. “Clarity, good dreams, fighting evil… what can’t plants do?” “Very little, my dear. Very little.”

She wasn’t so sure anymore. The mantle of herbalist, magician and scientist that healed through muddled leaves and bitter tinctures, grew heavy in her travels far from home. She had seen the resilient, towering trees of the Icefield and the verdant, bountiful harvests of the Labyrinth. Everything the earth below had to offer. Still clans suffered, warriors fell, clerics struggled to keep up with evolving conflicts. And then she came upon the Ykwi’maw of the Ashfall Waste. Native roots soaked into the magma and the flowers they blossomed spat embers. It was the order of life, defied. She was bound to it.

The flameweeds on her workbench spewed tiny gaseous sparks, and behind her, Foma startled. “Must you be working with those inside?” Carlysle nudged the tea tray closer to him and then studiously ignored his stare. “Drink the chamomile while it’s hot.
