The first day of Obsidian’s birth they felt a strong pull they could not describe. A hatchling so young could scarcely understand what such a thing could mean, they only found themselves wandering in the night toward the west the moment they could walk, some distant place they did not know. It was a place made of rock and sand they had never seen, but somehow they saw clear as if it were right in front of them. Their family found it odd such a youngling would wander so soon, the moment they broke free from the egg they were already looking west with a strange longing. Eventually, still early in the hatchling’s life, the wandering rock clan’s first members arrived.
They knew the fate of dragons such as themselves, doomed to eventually be overcome by the call of their crystals. So they came to the aid of a dragon so young with such a strong crystalline bond they could feel it across the lands, hoping to help before it was too late.
The clan took Obsidian under their wing with their family’s blessing, showed them what the call meant, and how to live with the overwhelming and eventually crippling bond.
Obsidian however quickly moved beyond their expectations, and beyond their understandings. The bond they shared with their crystal was faster and more powerful than the others. Obsidian began to share knowledge with the infinitely old crystalline beings, and welcomed it despite the consequences, for they began to understand the strange being’s bonds so fast they intertwined their essence with the dragons. As they began to comprehend, they realized what it could mean, and sought the crystal knowledge hungrily, hoping to end the curse for their found family.
Obsidian’s desire to help however, only drove their bond further and faster. Their vision was tunneled by the addictive desire to know and fix the alien pull they had felt their whole life, but much of the clan saw such a tragedy unfolding, and could only hope to stop them before it was too late.
They tried and pleaded, each asking in their own way and time, trying to make Obsidian see the crystals knew, would always know, and would use it against them. But Obsidian persisted, convinced their bond was a natural and necessary consequence that could be reversed if only they found it; the one way to unravel the ties and be free from the grip of the beings awakened by their clan long ago.
It was not until Aventurine arrived that Obsidian’s vision began to clear, slowly pulling them away from their obsession to something else, something new, and a dragon full of hope and fire.
But the drive remains, and in the absence of such devotion, the crystal beings only pull harder.
