Mercury was named not for the Roman god, nor the planet, but for the early manned spaceflight program conducted by NASA in response to Soviet advancements in the field. The Mercury program was NASA's first manned spacecraft program. Seven men, known as the Mercury Seven, trained for this program. Unlike the Soyuz program, Mercury was short-lived, lasting from 1958 (the year after Sputnik 1's launch) to 1963 (the year of Valentina Tereshkova's first flight.) The short-lived nature of the Mercury program was largely due to its 3 very concise objectives: to put someone in orbit around the Earth, study how well they were able to maneuver in weightlessness, and recover both them and their spacecraft safely. After these objectives were completed, the program was retired to make way for the Gemini program. |
Mercury the dragon is kind-hearted but practical. He spent many years as a vagrant after leaving his poorer clan in search of work. Had he spent more time in one profession, he probably would have gotten fairly successful in it; he's a quick learner, and he's worked as a potter, an alchemist's assistant, a merchant, a basket weaver, and even a farm worker. As of now, he's settled as an accountant for an engineering firm in the Shifting Expanse. Mercury doesn't talk much, but that's only if you don't initiate the conversation yourself. Once you start him, Mercury is beyond willing to tell the tales of his travels, some a little more hyperbolic than others. But regardless of how wild his tales may be, he can appreciate the simple things in life, and he loves more than anything a good meal and a friendly clanmate to share it with.
