"Try as one may, it is impossible to deny one's nature"

The whispers of his origin begin and end as stories. On a cool summer evening the tenders of the orchard will rest beneath the trees and say Aesop was grown from a seed, and when they claim to witness that merely by breath flora will flourish before him, then directly out of the Behemoth herself. As their protector, the clan will boast of Aesop’s wisdom of Sornieth, but in the backdrop of grey, bare days, a mere glimpse of him away from his charge deepens doubts to assume he has never left the orchard. His stubbornness rivals any Snapper, and his stout and stocky demeanor persuades some to believe he was one originally. They whisper in all parts of the clan, the growers from the cliffs to the forest, but never do they dare whisper of his charge. His first seed, which he planted as the beginning of the orchard, is the largest tree among the entire clan. It’s trunk could house a small lair of dragons, and its height surpasses even their largest Imperial. Aesop tends other seeds, but none have grown to be the spectacle of his first. Once a year, during the Greenskeeper Gathering, every dragon chooses one apple, the finest of their garden, and he takes them to the Behemoth, though what he does with them and why is unknown. New dragons and trees are exempt from this tradition, but those who have refused to give an offering often end up vanishing from the clan, with no trace. |
