Take off the mask when you're speaking to me.

Runt is an enigma. One of the swamp members found her in a little cove, and received quite the attack from the little hatchling. It was only after he offered her food and shelter that she released him from her vine bonds. While she ate, Axa leered at her and called her what most had been thinking. ""...Runt-like, isn't she?"" When she looked up and smiled, Sludge laughed and gave her that name.

╭
Runt grew up slowly, seeming to take years to grow to the same size others did in months. It didn't curb her enthusiasm, often going through the Swamp Denizen's hoard and finding hand-me-downs among them. Strutting around in overlarge kilts and gloves, she practiced her magic while the others watched. She'd dance around, slinging vines at imaginary foes and making furniture in her own little world, but destroy it all and hide once someone unfamiliar came near. One day that someone was Oxomo. Oxomo, a reserved lady from another clan, had been watching the girl for days, keeping tabs on her abilities. She had been searching for an apprentice for a while now, and when a merchant near her had spoken of the powerful girl, she hunted Runt down. It was her skill with weaving vines that urged Oxomo to greet Runt, and take her as her apprentice. It was hard, Runt's crippling shyness made it impossible to get through to her. The mention of food helped coax her into following Oxomo. Runt was wild, and her social etiquette poor, but her talents impressed Oxomo. It didn't take long for her primary profession - mask making - to become threatened by Runt's ability. At first it was rookie mistakes and impatience that kept the quality of Runt's masks low, but with age came practice. While Rumt herself was of no danger, as her skill in enchantment was very poor, Oxomo could foresee the wrong type of people getting a hold of the hapless girl and forcing her to make dangerous weapons used in war. Masks that hid the entire user, masks that protected the user from spells and injuries, masks that prevented the user from dying. It was a dangerous profession, and one she had carefully contained to the making of trinkets and charms. Runt's skill was beyond mere trinkets. When Oxomo held two identical masks in her hand, she knew it was time for Runt to go, before someone realised the danger of her talents. It was time for her to hide back in the safety of her swamp, away from the criminals that often sought Oxomo's masks. She destroyed her own, burning it with a magic flame, before infusing Runt's mask with luck and her own, personal gift. It was for her own safety. Heading back to the clearing where Runt played with her vines, Oxomo watched her apprentice, the girl who'd been under her care for the last few years, and blinked the tears from her vision. Silently walking over, she handed the mask over, urging her to put it on. Runt could feel magic flowing from the mask, and Oxomo's signature style, but the mask felt warm and comfortable, like it was hers. Putting it on and setting the fur around her shoulders, she opened her eyes - and saw colours. The vines in front of her were laced with a terracotta orange, while faint black lines streaked through. Hers. Oxomo glowed a dull red but her body hurt to look to look at for too long. She was safe, friendly, but dangerous. Oxomo nodded when Runt tried to recoil. ""Now you can see someone's true intentions. Their feelings, their dreams, hopes, wishes. Their traces of magic, and their traces of poison. Don't let anyone try to fool or trick you, Runt. Keep your mask near you at all times. You have finished your training with me, Runt. You are free to go."" Runt turned her face away from Oxomo's, before hugging her tightly. Oxomo froze and roughly patted her on the back, before pushing her away. Runt began to walk back to her room, where she had collected all sorts of clothes and knickknacks over the years, but stopped when Oxomo called out. ""Runt... one more thing. Don't make a mask ever again. Don't tell anybody of what I taught you, don't show anybody, and don't you dare make a mask."" ""But why?"" Puzzlement and betrayal was clearly written all over the young skydancer's face. ""I have taught you an art that channels your talent into a physical form. That physical form changes dependent of the person wielding it. My talent is masks. Make a mask, and you hurt me. Find your own passion, Runt, and make it your art."" Puzzlement turned to understanding, and Runt nodded sharply. ""Thankyou, Oxomo."" She watched the child disappear into the forest, as the sun set and the light dwindled. Soon only flashes of the skydancer's fiery wings could be seen. ""Goodbye child.""

ETYMOLOGY - In a group of animals (usually a litter of animals born in multiple births), a runt is a member which is smaller or weaker than the others. Owing to its small size, a runt in a litter faces obvious disadvantage, including difficulties in competing with its siblings for survival and possible rejection by its mother. RELATIONS -
