You can’t help but feel a little unsettled by the small dragon that stared at you. In all of your time, no one had ever acknowledged your presence. But this strange dragon, some hybrid type you haven’t seen before, hasn’t looked away since it spotted you.

A commotion early in the morning roused you from where you’d been dormant by the blood-runes and, by the time you’d drifted into the main hub, most of the excitement was already over. There was only the tail end of a hissed conversation and the retreating footsteps of a lumbering beast. And, of course, the new dragon. It was difficult to tell if it was a hatchling or just a small creature; it was absolutely tiny, but there was a confidence in its step and a whisper of deadly magic that came with age.

Either way, it was escorted into the lair by a pair of guards that didn’t seem too concerned. They both carried blankets and stern expressions and gestured to one of the few out-of-the-way corners of the hub and let the small dragon explore the hub. It settled into the corner, stretched its tiny wings, and seemed content to make a nest out of the blankets. It was a charming sight, you thought. Yawning, the dragon nodded to some question you didn’t quite hear, and the guards, seemingly content by the response, took their leave. It seemed about ready to fall asleep when its oozing, pupil-less eyes drifted over to you.

It froze, something akin to surprise held in its frame. Then it deliberately unclenched its paws and borrowed deeper into its nest. It didn’t take its eyes off you, tracking your movements as you drifted to the other side of the hub.

Curious.

But something to unravel at a different time.
You don't remember why, but they were important. A Spiral, pearlcatcher, and skydancer. Why were they important? You'd sworn to... you weren't sure. But you had to remember. bU7V5On.png

You never recalled their names. Only their desperate bravery and magic they'd breathed into life. All you can feel is sorrow and a sense of unspeakable loss.
Time had always passed strangely for you- flickers of action between stretches of void-like sleep, but you did know that some time had passed since you’d last seen the small dragon. It hadn’t grown very much, but there was a robustness to its frame that spoke of good meals and good shelter and good company that made you believe it had settled into clan-life.

Again, it froze as you approached, it’s chirruped conversation trailing off with a shudder and a puff of frigid air. Those eyes bore into you. Searching.

With visible effort it tore its gaze away and turned to its companion with a shaky laugh and a shake of its head. It gestured and the two continued down the tunnel, swallowed by the darkness and the labyrinth you’d only begun to explore.

And, aside from quick glimpses here and there (the flicker of a silky tail just darting around a corner or the prickle of unseen eyes staring out of the shadows) that was the last time you saw the strange dragon in a long while.

The next time you see the dragon, you knew something had changed.

You’d followed a nagging sense down a dusty path and ended up in a wide cavern you hadn’t known existed. There were alcoves carved into the walls all full of dust and rusted trinkets and cracked stones.

“You need to go,” the dragon said, nearly startling you.

You frowned. Go where? you wanted to ask, but the words wouldn’t come.

The dragon stepped out of the shadows, not quite looking at you. Its sightless eyes were fixed on one of the alcoves beside you.

“You shouldn’t be here,” it spoke again, nearly apologetic, as it reached into the stone. There was a clink as claws dug into metal and the sound dug into your soul.

The dusty paw stretched out to you. It was filled with ancient coin and a single, ashen scale. It’s entirely the wrong color, but you know that scale. It’s yours. You flinch back, flickering almost entirely away.

“I wasn’t sure at first,” it whispers, “But I know. Whatever’s keeping you here? You can let it go. It’s done now. You don’t have to be afraid.”

You want to shake your head because that’s not true. Not even a little bit. But something is stopping you. Something cold is tightening around your throat and you can’t even rip your gave away from the brittle, dented scale held in that surprisingly gentle paw. Words boil on your tongue, but all that spills out is a bitter tasting sludge and a gurgle.

“It’s ok.”

It really really isn’t. Because you remember now. You know exactly what is bubbling, oozing up from inside you and it’s too late to stop it now.
