A skilled healer, Ratchet has travelled far and served many clans in the course of a Search that has spanned most of his considerable lifespan.

He never settled for long enough to claim a particular person or place as his Charge- as there was always some conflict or other to follow, battlefields to scour for survivors, wounds to knit, fevers to cure. This has lead more than one dragon to joke that, perhaps, the whole of dragonkind was his charge. A claim that would inevitably get an eyeroll and a snort from the gruff guardian; he simply went where his skills were needed, that was all.

When he finally found himself on Beacon Rock, decades had passed and his claws were not as nimble as they once were. For all his medical knowledge he could not fix his own arthritic paws, and it seemed as though his usefulness was coming to an end.

But the island was far from empty; here was a small but growing clan with all the expected ailments and a slow trickle of lost, shipwrecked, and often injured newcomers. Perhaps he could still help, at least until he found a dragon to whom he could pass on his knowledge.

...That, at least, was what he expected would happen. But as some guardians age, they experience a surge in arcane power. Such was the case with Ratchet. With training magic could do much of what his stiffened claws could not- perhaps his time was not over after all...?
