History of the CHRC

- o v e r v i e w -
Founded in the Crystalspine Reaches by four pioneers, the CHRC is a small research center with a focus on the sciences and technology. Some members also offer courses, apprenticeships, and/or private tutoring, though this isn't the Center's main purpose. Since its formation, the CHRC has relocated to the Highland Scrub... and then to the Shattered Plain.

"We're basically just a bunch of dragons who like learning stuff."
-Eklektika

While in the Crystalspine Reaches, the CHRC grew from a small group of intellectuals into a thriving research center. Five main departments were created: the Departments of the Physical Sciences, Technology, Magic, Alchemy & Chemistry, and Earth & Life Sciences.

One of the earliest projects at the Center was a secret endeavor among members of the Department of Magic to reanimate a corpse. This was a success of sorts (and quite a shock to the rest of the Center)... at least for a while. Lazarus, as he was known, had no memory of his past life; however, he was good-natured and assisted with a lot of Center functions, particularly in the departments of Chemistry and Magic. Until he crumbled into dust shortly after the move to Lightning, that is.

The departments of Physical Science, Technology, and Magic have been working on the Time Machine Project almost as long as they have existed. As a matter of fact, it was a success- but then a humble programmer named Xek used it to travel back in time and destroyed the reality in which the CHRC succeeded.

As more members joined, a group with a special interests in robotics emerged. Known casually as 'Page 2', it later gained an official status and was named the Bot Division. Pressure from this group prompted the Center's move to Lightning, where their goals could be better achieved.

Other notable happenings:
-Ixitxachitl left.
-Caern and Eklektika took up temporary meteorbombing jobs. Eklektika was fabulous at it, Caern was terrible at it. But shhh he still misses it...

Significant members who joined during this time:
- Greer (founder) - Ixitxachitl (founder) - Llyr (founder) - Asterion (founder) - Caern - Noor - Eklektika - Akatriel - Estariel - Io - Sibyl - Xek - Seneca - Lazarus - Alioth - Calypso -
- l i g h t n i n g -
The thriving Bot Division created a number of lifebots (robots created using varying amounts of living tissue and/or matter) and robots while living in the Highland Scrub.

In addition, the CHRC started offering classes and tutoring. Most of these students went on to work for the Stormcatcher, but a few (most notably Ixchel and Vesta) continued on to aid in research at the CHRC.

The CHRC members expected the Shifting Expanse to be their permanent home, so they set up an elaborate facility. The Center was made up of eight main force field hexdomes, along with a system of underground dorms and storage rooms. The domes were as follows:
- SkyEye -
~~~~~Founded primarily by Arcane dragons, it should be no surprise that the Center began with an observatory. Formerly known as the 'Obervatory/Observatorium'.
- The Kat Archives -
~~~~~Informally set (and named) up by Akatriel, the CHRC's library grew and become the favorite haunt of many members.
- ChemLab -
~~~~~Members who weren't actively involved in the Chemistry department generally avoided it.
- EarthLab -
~~~~~Often used as a multi-purpose room, since there weren't usually a lot of geoscientists at the CHRC.
- LifeLab -
~~~~~There were a lot of weird things in here.
- CHRC Medical Center -
~~~~~The Lifelab, Med Center, MageLab, and Tech Center were sometimes known as the 'Bot Tetrad', since they collaborated to create the most complicated lifebots.
- MageLab -
~~~~~Nobody except for the mages really knew what went on in here.
- Tech Center -
~~~~~Since the CHRC's recent technological explosion, it was only been a matter of time before a Tech Center was added.

Though the Center was thriving, this was not to last. A large number of members left, and the Bot Division dispersed, leaving little to do but work on the stale Time Machine Project. Departments shrunk to laughable sizes, and research was officially stalled due to insufficient funding.

Other notable happenings:
-Ixitxachitl came back and everyone cried.
-LENKA's creation... pretty notable.
-The biography project (Akatriel, Alioth, Lazarus, Wenna) became a big deal. "Wenna was better at this." -Laz
-Vesta started bugging everyone about building a cyclotron. Bad timing.

Significant members who joined during this time:
- Wenna - Yukawa - Wiztix - Ixchel - Vesta - Aryabhata - Lise - Morag -

- LENKA - WISF - PAIL - ARKBOT - TI84 - CoHoST - Tekla -

Why did the CHRC move to Earth?
Prolonged stagnation stimulated a desire for change. Greer, the Center's head (and sole geoscientist), suggested it. Everyone was up at 2am with heads buzzing from obscene amounts of caffeine, and they decided it was going to happen.

"NOTE: At the moment, the Center is too low on faculty to maintain all its functions. Research is temporarily stalled as the facilities are undergoing renovation."

The CHRC members found it difficult to set up a research facility that fit all their needs while in Earth, and ultimately moved back to the Shifting Expanse.

Other notable happenings:
-Ixitxachitl and Eklektika left and everyone cried again.
-The Department of Magic officially closed due to there being only one member. Caern is sort of affiliated with the Department of Alchemy & Chemistry now.
-Vesta developed the AI Lagrange, which was shut down soon after launch due to inordinate influence over other Center bots.
