______ Uh-oh, looks like this curious couldron user wandered a little too far from his home lair (Lopika, 204939), and now he's off to see the world! If ever you feel the need to exalt, he'd really appreciate it if you could just return him to the home lair, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here. This is not necessary, but he would be very grateful!

______ Toxic was always curious - it might be his elemental nature. He enjoyed brewing "things" in his cauldron from a young age. He never produced anything useful, but that never really bothered him. In a wind clan he found a partner: Calamity, who is a mute evil spirit and spreads - well, calamity, as her name suggests. Toxic decided to follow the plain looking Fae and spread his residues wherever the female took him.

______ The Alchemist traveled far until he came across the Arcanist's territory.'What?! How is this possible?' thought Toxic. He was hoping to stop at the water region so he could get some tools for his cauldron. The Fae laughed, then flew away.

Toxic slowly walked into the trees. 'Is this Star Wood Strand?' he asked himself. 'Yes, yes it is!' replied a voice startling Toxic. As Toxic whirred around, he came across a blood-red mirror dragon who looked as if she was in charge of this place. "Friend or Foe," the female mirror growled. "F-friend!" yelped Toxic. "I'm just passing by!" he added. The mirror's snarl relaxed a bit.

"Sorry if I scared you. The name's Mud. I'm the leader of this clan territory you are in. It's the half of Star Wood Strand!" she said. Toxic looked down at his talons. A leader of half of Star Wood was talking to him. Mud was grinning at him, though.

"I'll let you pass." she said. And Toxic did. He did, far, far away.

______ Time brought him where he'd never been before, and he was dazzled by the glimmering lands around him. They said it was the realm of the Lightweaver, and as such, he should've been far less enthused - but he simply couldn't help himself. There, he met Teegra, a fire dragon he traveled with through the lands of Light. Her company was a spark of fresh air in a world of confusion, and it wasn't so strange that they laid a nest the day she proposed.

What happened to her later, he wasn't sure - he'd left to gather sea-shells for the hatchlings to play with once they hatched, but when he returned, the only sign of Teegra was a mess of feathers - she must have been attacked, and just as the nest hatched, as well. Fearing that whatever had taken his lovers life was still nearby, he grabbed the closest hatchling, told them to hold hands, and ran.

As night fell and he took refuge in a cave, he discovered that only one hatchling was still with him. Needless to say, it was difficult falling asleep that night - and even more difficult waking up, and realizing that his last hatchling, whom he had named Grey just the night before, was no longer there, either.

______ The cave Toxic chose to hide out in for safety from the unknown threat that had taken away both his love and his hatchlings seemed to go from the Light flight all the way to Shadow and what seemed like to Plague, but he was stopped in Shadow before he could confirm this, and if any other Flights were connected, by quite the Ridgeback. "And what have you been doing down here, don't you know?" The Ridgeback said in a low voice to Toxic. Before letting Toxic answer, he swept his tail and wings over him, and lead him down another path that opened out into a cavern full of dragons, mostly Mirror's and Ridgebacks, darting from tunnel to tunnel. He took Toxic to a less active tunnel with an Imperial seemingly covered in Apparel that he may or may not have been wearing. The Imperial dressed Toxic with any apparel he could find to suit his colors, then sent him out with the Ridgeback. Exactly what was going on, it seemed like not even the Ridgeback new...

______ After several eternally-night-nights,
there had been no more sense made of what had happened over the span of the time Toxic had resided in the controlled chaos that is this clan. But, he was left unscaved, and also left with a warning from the same Ridgeback that found him, to not let his eyes off other dragons, as things have been lurking.

______ The feeling of things long since lurking had been flitting at the edge of his mind for ages. No matter what clan or cave he found himself in he couldn't escape the foreboding feeling of something lurking in the shadows. Even the newest cave in the Starfall region couldn't shine light into the deep recesses of his anxiety surrounding the warning from the Ridgeback. Maybe it was time to move on for good, and find what the feeling was originating from.

______ He traveled many days and many nights over many different landscapes to search for a place to calm his fears. At long last, he arrived in a clan in the Gladeveins, hidden amongst the colorful forest. They found him collapsed with exhaustion at the entrance and rushed him to their healers. When he awoke, he was in a beautiful cave with all the space he could ever need. There were flowering vines covering every wall, and colorful mushrooms growing in each crack and corner. Looking around more, he noticed that the entrance was partially covered by a crystal-clear roaring waterfall. Strangely, the air smelled of honey. As he stood up, a back and green Nocturne poked their head through the entrance and greeted him.

He spent a few days with this clan, listening to stories of other travelers that have passed through and the reasons behind why the air always smelled like honey even with the significant lack of bees in the area. One night, however, he felt the familiar surge of anxiety and wariness. He didn't want to leave this kind and safe clan, but he knew he had to soon.

______ When Toxic had come across the HollowShade clan, he was wary. It was upon a small clearing he had become confused. He had been in the Shadow territory before, but it had always been darker than dark in those parts. Here was lit up by glowing fungi, something that intrigued him if for a moment before his anxieties returned. A voice, deep and elegant but with a slight lisp, rang out in the clearing. "Hello, traveler. Please leave anything dangerous where you stand. You will not be needing them, we are harmless.." Toxic had nearly jumped out of his feathers when he heard the voice, eyes searching in the dark for the being it belonged to. His eyes landed on a dark coatl, his wings vibrant in green and blue hues. "My name is Aster. I am the leader of this clan."

Toxic was puzzled as he followed the Coatl, coming into a neat little clearing littered with homes. Hatchlings darted here and there and when he turned back to look ahead of him, he found himself in front of an Elderly Fae and Guardian. Comfort seemed to wash over him when the Fae fluttered closer. "You have traveled far, Skydancer." Her voice seemed light and wise. A smile crossed her face. "Please, rest up." She said, in which Toxic suddenly felt himself growing sleepy.

The little Fae led him into a warm hut, the smell of incense infiltrating his nostrils as he fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke days later, it was with a startled yelp. For a moment he hadn't remembered where he was, but he felt...at ease? The curious face of a hatchling bounced into his vision and the little spiral giggled. "You still have much traveling to do, wanderer." The spiral, couldn't be more than a few hours old, sounded wise and older than it looked. Toxic was puzzled by what the small spiral had stated, later learning his name was Asiah and he was a gifted young thing. After the incident with the young spiral, Toxic couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty gnawing at him. He needed to leave this clan. So, that night when everyone was asleep, Toxic did just that, and disappeared into the night on his travels.

______ He traveled for many days. He could barely stay in one place for long. Every night, he felt like he was being watched. He had to keep going.

Exhausted and dehydrated, he wandered the desert of the Shifting Expanse. His anxieties were heightened due to the lack of cover. There were too few places to hide. He was exposed. Of course, his fear couldn't keep him on his feet forever. His vision blurred, and soon he couldn't take another step before collapsing on the sand. His last thought was wondering what that strange, dragon-like shape in the distance was...

He woke, finding himself in a den. He didn't know where he was. He was in an unknown territory, in an unknown dragon's home. Before he could voice his fear, a skydancer hurried into the cave, and shoved a potion into his claws.

"Drink," she said, her voice surprisingly commanding. Her eyes were glowing. He was too delirious to think straight, and her order had him immediately downing the mysterious liquid. He was out like a light.

He woke up again. The skydancer was in the cave, organizing some of her things. When she noticed he was awake, she immediately apologized for hypnotizing him. She was terrified about his state, and wanted to keep him calm while he was taken care of.

For the next few days, the clan, the Skyfire Sanctuary, took care of Toxic. He was supplied with lots of water and bed rest. The skydancer, Beryl, kept him company. He stayed for longer than he ever had before. He watched as the clan celebrated the Ice festival, keeping to himself. Sometimes, other dragons would come by to check on him. He kept feeling an itch to leave, he wanted to, but no one would let him out of sight.

The nights were really bad, however. He kept finding himself startling awake during the twilight hours, panicked and paranoid. Beryl seemed to find him each time and help him recollect himself. She taught him how to slow down his breathing("breathe in for a count to 4, hold for a count to 7, and then breathe out for a count to 8," he remembered she said). It didn't stop any of his paranoia...but it helped. A little.

Finally, Beryl and a coatl came by, with supplies. They said he'd recovered enough to continue on his journey, if he wanted to. Hearing those words were a relief.

Beryl held his claws, suddenly, and said, "Remember the breathing exercises. And be careful." She let go quickly, and she and the coatl backed out of the cave to give him space. He immediately spread his wings and took off from the den and into the air. He felt nervous, and jittery, but for once, a little less so.

______ He didn't travel very far from his last refuge. Whilst Toxic had originally gone to the traveller-friendly clan located near one of Lightning's railway hubs to stay a night, he soon engaged a permanent resident, Bunsen, in energetic and insightful discussions on alchemy. For many weeks the two met daily to test new potions and techniques, and for the first time in a long time Toxic found himself completely relaxed; finally, he was buried deep in a space he knew and was comfortable with.

But the initial encouragement of the clan turned to worry. Toxic barely ate or slept, so lost in alchemy that he seemed to have become numb to the outside world. He was unresponsive to whatever they said to him. Finally Bunsen and the others physically dragged him from the lab, and Toxic blinked in the sunlight, red-eyed and dazed. After lots of rest he was able to recover his senses ..... including the sensations he had been trying to drown out.

It wasn't long before his continued on his journey. Bunsen saw him off at the station, and waved until the train was but a speck in the distance.

______ An odd skydancer had left the train at the same moment he did, exiting onto Arcane ground as the moons rose high in the sky. One wing extended, glinting; “if you are in need of a place to stay- as I suspect you are, there is a place not more than three leagues from here. I go there now; if you wish to join.”
Cryptic and more than a little unnerving for the drake who’d encountered enough strangeness in his life.
He followed.

He had suspected that he would be there a few nights, at most. Nights became weeks, and weeks months. Half a year passed before he had realized; in all that time, the old horrors were buried just below the waking mind. He slept fitfully, and occasionally was subject to the old memories while awake- watching his children, his mate, vanish; he hadn’t remembered seeing it happen before, but now…
Were the arcane magics to blame for these waking visions that haunted him even as he worked, awake and aware?

He startled when the dark and stone-work face of the skydancer he’d met before stood in front of him again; he’d been crying, he supposed, based on the grimace he wore, the blur of his vision.
“Why do you let them haunt you?” Had been the remark of that dark creature. He would learn later that her name was Ephron, but he would only remember that for a few days. The posture and face would become vague, but the words sharp for a time that stretched long.

He saw- or rather, noticed her more often after that.
Occasionally she would approach him, and with all the cryptic and fearsome strangeness that he’d come to expect from her, she would speak some other thing to similar effect. Why do you let them haunt you?
“Talk to someone about it.”
“Why?”
“It harms you to let old wounds fester. You would not leave a cut unchecked in your work; why then a gash in your heart and mind should be left open and bleeding so long?”
He didn’t want to answer that.

Toxic prepared, after two seasons, to be on his way again; thanking the clan and the researchers for having him, for letting him join their research at all.
She was there, to wave him off. He didn’t particularly want to think about it.
“Do not let the past consume you,” she said.
“Goodbye,” he answered, taking flight and letting the winds take him where they would.
